INDIANAPOLIS — A person familiar with the negotiations says the Indianapolis Colts are “close” to reaching a deal to hire Josh McDaniels as their new coach.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because they were still working on the contract.

But even if the two sides agreed to a deal, the official announcement couldn’t be made until New England’s season ends. McDaniels is the Patriots’ offensive coordinator and is preparing for Sunday’s AFC championship game.

McDaniels has been one of the most coveted coordinators on the coaching carousel this year.

McDaniels and Houston defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel are believed to be the Colts’ finalists.

McDaniels went 11-17 in two seasons as Denver’s head coach in 2009-10.

TITANS: Tennessee and Mike Mularkey couldn’t agree on how to build off the team’s first playoff berth since 2008 and become a true NFL contender.

That job will now fall to a new coach.

The Titans split with Mularkey on Monday after he revived a team with the NFL’s worst record over two seasons and led them to their first playoff victory in 14 years. The Titans announced the move two days after a 35-14 loss to New England in the AFC divisional round.

“It became evident that we saw different paths to achieve greater success,” controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said.

GIANTS: Pat Shurmur is poised to become the 18th head coach of the Giants, according to the NFL Network.

The Vikings’ offensive coordinator still has to finish the playoff run with his current team, but according to the network’s source the Giants will offer him the job when he becomes available and Shurmur is expected to accept it. A source confirmed those expectations to Newsday on Monday, but cautioned that minds can change and nothing is official.

SEAHAWKS: Cornerback Jeremy Lane has been arrested on investigation of driving under the influence.

King County Jail records show he was booked at 5:30 a.m. Sunday. He was released less than four hours later on his own recognizance after posting $1,000 bail. Additional details were not immediately available. The Seahawks say they are aware of the arrest but had no further comment. Lane responded to his arrest with brief series of tweets Monday that were later deleted.

PRO BOWL: The coaching staffs of the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints have been selected to work the Pro Bowl on Jan. 28.
