South Portland senior Molly Mawhinney was named Tuesday as Maine’s Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year. Mawhinney led the nascent Red Riots program to the Class A state final in October and was named the Class A Player of the Year, as well as being chosen by The Forecaster as South Portland’s Fall Female Athlete of the Year. Mawhinney, a 5-foot-11 outside hitting machine, is the first Red Riot to be chosen. She had 181 kills, 111 digs and 66 service aces. She is undecided on her college choice.
