Two transfer students sign to play for UMaine football

The University of Maine announced the signings of two transfers Tuesday who will be eligible to compete this spring.

Offensive lineman Tyler Royal, a 6-foot-3, 335-pound offensive lineman, played as a freshman last year for Cheyney University in Cheyney, Pennsylvania. He is from Raleigh, North Carolina.

Wide receiver Brian Dolan played in 10 games as a freshman last year with Pace University. Dolan is from Sparta, New Jersey.

• Kevin Sumlin calls the head coaching job at Arizona “the right place and the right challenge.”

He made the comment at a news conference introducing him as coach.

Sumlin said that when he spoke with Wildcats AD Dave Heeke about the job, talk inevitably turned to the Rose Bowl. Arizona is the only one of the original Pac-10 never to play in the game.

“I said, ‘It is going to happen,”‘ Sumlin said.

Sumlin was fired after compiling a 51-26 record the past six seasons at Texas A&M.

• Syracuse hired Mike Cavanaugh as offensive line coach. He comes from Nebraska, where he served in the same role for three seasons.

• John McNulty left the Los Angeles Chargers for a second stint as the offensive coordinator at Rutgers.

After leaving the Scarlet Knights after the 2008 season, the 49-year-old McNulty has worked with wide receivers with the Cardinals, quarterbacks with the Titans and tight ends with the Chargers

• Heisman Trophy runner-up and Doak Walker Award winner Bryce Love is returning to Stanford for his senior season. Love set a Stanford record with 2,118 yards rushing this season.

RETIREMENT: The brother and agent of 2005 Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldinho says the former Brazil and Barcelona playmaker has retired from football. Ronaldinho’s last professional match was in 2015 for Brazil’s Fluminense.

FA CUP: In a first for English soccer, a goal was awarded thanks to the intervention of a video assistant referee as Leicester advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s deft finish was ruled out by the assistant referee for offside against the Leicester striker in the 77th minute, only for the decision to be overturned and the goal given by the on-field referee about 70 seconds later on the advice of the VAR.

That second goal for Iheanacho clinched a 2-0 win for Leicester over third-tier Fleetwood.

ARSENAL: Manager Arsene Wenger accused a referee of being “not honest” and called him “a disgrace” in a rant inside the match officials’ changing room that led to a three-match touchline ban for one of English soccer’s most experienced coaches.

The English Football Association published the written reasons behind its decision to ban Wenger for being abusive toward referee Mike Dean after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Dec. 31.

ABU DHABI: Rory McIlroy is making a comeback at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Jan. 18-21 after ending his season early last year. He has not played a round since the final day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship on Oct. 8.

McIlroy is a four-time major champion who has slipped to No. 11 in the world rankings. He injured a rib in his first outing of 2017 and felt its effects throughout the year.
