The 2017-18 winter sports season has passed the midway point and while local squads have a lot to be proud of, there is also still a lot of work to do as each game, meet and event takes on added importance.

Here’s a glimpse:

Girls’ basketball

Brunswick’s defending Class A South champion girls’ basketball team remained undefeated with recent wins at Lincoln Academy (58-34) and Leavitt (57-27) to improve to 10-0 and second in the Heal Points standings behind Greely at press time. The Dragons go to Messalonskee Friday and play at Morse Tuesday.

Morse was 2-9 and eighth in Class A South following a 44-41 loss at Mt. Ararat, a 63-28 loss at Edward Little, a 57-53 home win over Lincoln Academy, a 66-28 loss at York and a 65-38 setback at home to Freeport. After hosting Medomak Valley Thursday, the Shipbuilders welcome Brunswick Tuesday.

Mt. Ararat was 3-7 and 10th in Class A South after wins over visiting Morse (44-41) and Camden Hills (49-44) and a 53-39 loss at Freeport. The Eagles host Lincoln Academy Friday and go to Leavitt Tuesday.

Hyde was 2-4 and 16th in Class C South after a 30-19 home loss to Kents Hill, a 40-36 home victory over Islesboro and a 39-21 loss at St. Dom’s. The Phoenix went to Old Orchard Beach Wednesday, host Gould Friday and play at North Yarmouth Academy Tuesday of next week. 

Boys’ basketball

On the boys’ side, Brunswick was 7-3 and seventh in the Class A South Heals following home wins over Lincoln Academy (66-42) and Leavitt (61-43). After welcoming Messalonskee Friday, the Dragons play host to Morse Tuesday of next week. 

Mt. Ararat beat visiting Morse, 85-65, then fell to 3-7 after losses at Camden Hills (80-79) and at home to Freeport (67-60). The Eagles (10th in Class A South) go to Lincoln Academy Friday and host Leavitt Tuesday.

Morse fell to 1-10 after recent losses at Mt. Ararat (85-65), at home to Edward Little (89-28), at Lincoln Academy (67-58), at home to York (67-58) and at Freeport (72-65). The Shipbuilders (13th in Class A South) go to Medomak Valley Friday and visit Brunswick Tuesday.

Hockey

On the ice, Brunswick’s boys were 4-6 and fifth in Class B South after a 3-2 loss at Poland and a 2-0 home win over Gorham. The Dragons are home with red-hot Greely Saturday.

Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon fell to 2-7 and seventh in Class A North following home losses to South Portland/Waynflete/Freeport (6-2) and Cony (5-2). After Saturday’s home game versus Westbrook/Windham was postponed by bad weather, Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon hosted Poland Tuesday and is home versus Lawrence Monday.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick was 5-8 and sixth in the North Region following wins over visiting Yarmouth/Freeport (5-2) and Gorham/Bonny Eagle (6-3) and a 5-2 loss at Biddeford. The Dragons host Scarborough Saturday and go to Greely Wednesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat/Morse was 1-11 and eighth in the North following home losses to Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland (7-0) and two-time defending state champion (9-1). The squad went to Yarmouth/Freeport Wednesday and plays at Portland/Deering Wednesday of next week.

Indoor track

At last week’s KVAC indoor track meet, Mt. Ararat’s girls were second to Messalonskee, while the Eagles girls came in second behind Winslow.

Swimming

Morse’s swim team swept a recent meet against Lincoln Academy and Boothbay. The girls had 113 points, while Lincoln had 38 and Boothbay 12. In the boys’ meet, the Shipbuilders beat Lincoln, 98-50.

Brunswick was swept by Camden Hills, as the boys lost, 84-81, and the girls were beaten, 94-82.

Mt. Ararat was swept by Belfast, as the boys lost, 62-29, and the girls fell, 50-44.

Wrestling

The Mt. Ararat/Brunswick co-op wrestling team was 6-5 at press time following a 48-36 loss to Cony and a 40-36 loss to Spruce Mountain.

Morse/Wiscasset was also 6-5 after a 40-39 loss to Camden Hills.
