Two teenagers survived Thursday night after their snowmobile broke through ice in the area of Long Pond in Belgrade and they nearly drowned, authorities said.
Caleb Moore, 18, of Belgrade, was driving a Ski-Doo snowmobile with a 17-year-old passenger, Joshua Stevens, also of Belgrade, according to a news release from Cpl. John MacDonald of the Maine Dept of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife.
The two teenagers went through the ice into Belgrade Stream at the outlet of Long Pond, MacDonald said.
Emergency responders and firefighters from multiple towns, as well as the Maine Warden Service, went to the scene. Some firefighters, before responding to the rescue, had just been at a barn fire in Belgrade, the deputy chief said.
One victim was taken off the ice on a rescue sled, and a LifeFlight helicopter went to the scene, according to William Pulsifer, deputy fire chief in Belgrade, who was not at the scene but spoke by phone Thursday night.
Moore and Stevens were both taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, where they were listed in stable condition Thursday night.
