Falmouth freshman Sofie Matson has been named Maine’s Gatorade Girls’ Cross Country Runner of the Year.

The award criteria includes athletic excellence as well as academic achievement and good character. Matson won the Class A state title and Festival of Champions and placed 10th in New Englands and 14th at the Foot Locker Northeast Regionals. She previously was named Maine Sunday Telegram Runner of the Year.

Matson also plays clarinet for the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and Portland Youth Symphony, writes for the school paper and competes for the debate team. Each Gatorade Runner of the Year winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate to a national or local youth sports organization and has the opportunity to write an essay explaining why their organization deserves additional support for a potential $10,000 grant, one for each of the 12 sports highlighted by the company.

The boys’ cross country winner for Maine will be announced in February.
