A woman in a motorized wheelchair was hit and injured by a motor vehicle Tuesday afternoon in Portland, and police are investigating the circumstances that led to the incident.

Deputy Fire Chief Mike Nixon, whose crews responded to the crash on Forest Avenue near Walton Street, said the victim was lying on the ground when he arrived. Her wheelchair was damaged and had to be removed from the crash scene.

The woman, whose name was unavailable, was trying to cross Forest Avenue when she was struck by a motorist. She was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center with what appeared to be non-life-threatening injuries, Nixon said.

“She appeared to be conscious and alert,” Nixon said.

Portland police could not be reached Tuesday for additional information concerning the crash.
