Liam Niles

Liam Niles, Portland Nordic skiing: A sophomore, Niles won the Sassi Memorial 5K Classic at Black Mountain by three seconds over Maine Coast Waldorf senior Nick Neveu in a time of 13 minutes, 40.6 seconds. The field included 154 skiers from 24 schools.

HONORABLE MENTION

Luke Laverdiere, Yarmouth indoor track: The senior ran a state-leading time of 9 minutes, 25.09 seconds in the 2-mile in a meet at USM last Friday, winning by a minute and a half. Laverdiere also has the fastest time in the mile this season (4:21.91).

Matt Sherburne, Wells basketball: The 5-foot-10 junior guard led Wells to three close wins in four days against highly ranked teams. He had 16 points in a 50-47 win at York; 15 points, seven rebounds and five steals in a 39-36 win against Yarmouth, and 22 points in a 54-49 double-overtime win at Kennebunk.

Caleb Rowland, South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete hockey: The senior wing scored with 34 seconds left to give the Red Riots a 3-2 win over Portland/Deering.

GIRLS

Abby Lamontagne

Abby Lamontagne, Cheverus/ Kennebunk hockey: The sophomore forward totaled 10 goals and five assists in three wins. She had four goals in victories over Biddeford and Cape Elizabeth/Waynflete/South Portland, and two goals and four assists in a 6-3 win over Falmouth.

HONORABLE MENTION

Sophia Laukli, Yarmouth Nordic skiing: A senior, Laukli won the Sassi Memorial 5K Classic at Black Mountain in a time of 14 minutes, 25 seconds – a minute ahead of the rest of the field of 118.

Julia Brisson, Greely diving: A junior, Brisson set a six-dive school record in a 104-74 win over Thornton Academy with a score of 258.05 points. The old mark of 252.30 by Briana Hoffner stood for 17 years.

Catherine Reid, Maine Girls’ Academy basketball: The junior guard helped the Lions improve to 12-2 with three victories. She scored 10 points in a 40-31 win over Sanford, 15 in a 44-34 win over Thornton Academy, and had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 48-43 win over Massabesic.
