Scarborough senior Gaby Panagakos, joined by her parents, Peter and Gina, and her sister, Elaina, signs her National Letter of Intent Monday to attend and play soccer at the University of Maine. Panagakos, who scored goals in abundance for the Red Storm, helping them win the Class A South title this past fall, had interest from many schools, but decided to stay close to home.
“I’ve always wanted to play soccer in college and playing at the Division One level is awesome,” said Panagakos, who plans to study nursing. “I heard from all divisions, but I decided to go (to Maine) at the end of my junior year when it became my number one. I’m excited to join the team.”
Red Storm coach Mike Farley believes Panagakos has what it takes to succeed at the next level as well.
“(Gaby’s) a freakish offensive talent,” Farley said. “If she would have played more on varsity as a freshman, she would have broken (Maureen McHugh’s) school (goal scoring) record. You can always count on good offensive players to be there in games. Athletically, she can play with anybody. She’ll do fine. She’s a smart kid and no one will be faster than her.”
