A Freeport woman died early Saturday morning, Feb. 10, in her home at 35 Wardtown Road after a fire started in the attic. Although three family members escaped, 68-year-old Donelda Madore was found dead by firefighters near the stairs of her living room. Investigators said it appeared she was overcome by smoke as she tried to escape. David Madore, 69, woke up to find his house filled with smoke and reported the fire just before 2 a.m. He escaped with two other adult family members. Madore tried to go back in to search for his wife, but yielded to heavy smoke. Due to extensive damage to the home, fire investigators said the cause of the fire will likely remain unknown. (Roger S.
