WELLS — South Coast Senior College is offering an array of interesting, life-long learning opportunities for residents over the age of 50 throughout York County and seacoast New Hampshire.

A part of the Maine Senior College Network, SCSC is an outreach program of York County Community College in Wells, where classes and lectures are held. No previous college experience is necessary, and there are no tests or homework.

Attendees like Vickie Hill of Kennebunk praise SCSC and its programs for several reasons.

“It’s a great opportunity to try something different without having to make a big time commitment,” said Hill, who recently took classes in Horsemanship 101 and Tools for Women. “I liked the fact that these were hands-on and and I became comfortable with tools and got to ride horseback.”

Besides learning new things, SCSC offers participants the chance to socialize and make new friends, said Nancye Tuttle of Wells, who has taken memoir writing, short story, flower arranging and poetry classes at SCSC.

SCSC has a full slate of courses and lectures planned for the spring semester beginning in March.

Classes are weekly, from four to eight weeks, and are taught by volunteer senior instructors who enjoy teaching seniors.  Attendees pay a yearly $25 membership fee and $25 per class.

Upcoming academic courses include Ethics, The Healing Power of Writing, Maine Authors, Israel and Palestine and The Great Gatsby. Hands-on classes include Fly Fishing, Flower Arranging and Acrylic Painting.

SCSC also hosts a series of one-session lectures and events. The spring term includes The Roots of Rock and Roll, Communicating with People with Dementia, Conserving Our Body’s Energy and Horsemanship 101.
