TORONTO — The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forwards Tomas Plekanec and Kyle Baun from the Montreal Canadiens for defenseman Rinat Valiev, forward Kerby Rychel and a 2018 second-round draft pick Sunday.

Plekanec, 35, had six goals and 18 assists in 60 games with Montreal this season. The native of Kladno, Czech Republic, has played in 981 NHL regular-season games, with 232 goals and 373 assists.

Plekanec has also appeared in 87 playoff games, recording 16 goals and 33 assists. Montreal originally selected Plekanec in the third round, No. 71 overall, in the 2001 draft.

Baun, 25, played in 54 games with the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League, with four goals and 12 assists. The Toronto native has 19 goals and 40 assists in 171 AHL regular-season games.

WAIVERS: The Minnesota Wild have placed forward Chris Stewart on waivers, according to a person with direct knowledge of the move.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Sunday because the transaction had not been announced. The 30-year-old Stewart has nine goals and four assists this season and 318 points in his career.

The person also said that Ottawa put defenseman Johnny Oduya and forward Alex Burrows on waivers and Columbus put forward Jussi Jokinen on waivers. All three players have had solid careers, but have not been productive this season.

NHL teams can claim players off waivers until noon Monday, three hours before the league’s trade deadline.

HURRICANES: The team says the infant daughter of team co-captain Jordan Staal has died.

Team spokesman Mike Sundheim said that Staal told him his daughter Hannah died Saturday. Staal missed the team’s two games this weekend because of family reasons.

RANGERS: The team honored Hall of Fame center Jean Ratelle by retiring his No. 19.

A banner with his name and number was raised to the rafters at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night in a ceremony before the Rangers hosted the Detroit Red Wings

Ratelle had 336 goals and 481 assists in 861 games over parts of 16 seasons in New York before he was traded to Boston in November 1975 and finished his career with the Bruins in 1981.

“This is incredible,” the 77-year-old Ratelle said. “It is an honor and privilege to see my sweater raised up to the rafters here at Madison Square Garden.”
