The mother and stepfather of a 10-year-old Stockton Springs girl who was found dead Sunday were arrested Monday evening and charged with murder, according to Maine State Police.

One of the adults called authorities around 2:30 p.m. Sunday to report that the girl, Marrissa Kennedy, was unresponsive, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

“The girl was dead when first responders arrived and state police detectives were called to investigate the death,” McCausland said.

Detectives interviewed Julio Carrillo, 51, and his wife, Sharon Carrillo, 33, at the state police office in Bangor before charging them with murder. The couple were taken to the Waldo County Jail, where they were being held Monday night without bail pending their first court appearance Tuesday or Wednesday in Belfast.

McCausland said the family had been living at a condominium at 7 Harbor View Drive in Stockton Springs that is owned by Sharon Carrillo’s parents.

The family had been living in Bangor before moving to Stockton Springs last fall, he said.

At the time of the girl’s death, there were two other children – ages 1 and 2 – in the home. McCausland said they were the Carrillos’ children, and the Maine Department of Health and Human Services took custody of them.

The state medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy Monday and determined that Kennedy was the victim of a homicide.

After consulting with the Maine Attorney General’s Office, state police detectives arrested the Carrillos just after 5 p.m. Monday.
