KENNEBUNKPORT — U.S. Coast Guard personnel are overseeing a site assessment of the sunken tugboat Capt Mackintire in the Gulf of Maine approximately 3 miles south of Kennebunkport.

A commercial marine services company is scheduled to dive on the Capt Mackintire beginning Tuesday to evaluate and explore the structural integrity of the sunken tug and to evaluate for potential pollution.

A Coast Guard spokesman said plans to establish a safety zone at the site of the dive operation have been launched, and they have issued a special marine information broadcast to alert mariners of the operation.

The vessel is currently underwater at a depth of about 160 feet.

The Coast Guard, Maine Department of Environmental Protection, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other federal, state and local agencies continue to coordinate daily aerial, water, and shoreline assessments.

The public is asked to report any signs of shoreline pollution to the Coast Guard Command Center at 767-0303.

An investigation into the cause of the sinking is continuing.
