EWING, N.J. — The University of New England women’s basketball team fell behind by 11 points in the first quarter and couldn’t recover as it lost 76-63 to Rochester Institute of Technology in the opening round of the NCAA Division III tournament Friday.

RIT (22-6) snapped an early tie with a 9-0 run midway through the first quarter, which ended with the Tigers ahead 23-12. UNE (23-6) got as close as three points midway through the third quarter, but RIT broke the game open by outscoring the Nor’easters 19-8 over the last 5:08 of the third.

Cori Okada scored 24 points and Jessica Glaz added 20 for RIT.

UNE, making its sixth straight appearance in the NCAA tournament, got 20 points from Ashley Coneys and 19 points and 11 rebounds from Olivia Shaw. Jocelyn Chaput finished with 16 points, but only five players scored for the Nor’easters, who were held to 31 percent shooting and made only 7 of 31 3-pointers.
