No rest for the weary. Another nor’easter is taking shape and will hit Maine with more snow. It’ll be a slow-mover, so snow will start on Tuesday and won’t end until Wednesday.

At least three commutes will be affected: Tuesday morning, Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

Snow will begin during the pre-dawn hours over southern Maine Tuesday morning, so roads will already be snow covered and slippery when most head out for the commute. By 8 a.m., it will be snowing from Augusta south.

The snow will begin around late morning and midday in central, eastern and northern areas.

It will get fierce by the afternoon and peak through the evening. Snow rates may top an inch per hour. Wind will whip and drift the snow, blizzard-like conditions will be possible and travel will be very difficult.

Snow will continue into Tuesday evening and night. By this point, the heavier bands of snow will start to become focused in central and eastern Maine; the snow will become “off and on” in southern Maine.

On Wednesday, the storm will become anchored over New Brunswick, Canada where it will slowly decay and weaken. However, upper level energy will keep the snow going, so when we wake up on Wednesday, it will still be coming down. Periods of snow, mostly lighter, will linger through the day.

At this point, snow totals are still a challenge. We feel confident the towns that will see a jackpot of snow will be in central and eastern Maine, where a foot to a foot and a half is possible.

We will be on the edge of a beast and the slightest wobble could mean the difference between 8 inches or 18 inches in southern Maine.  It’s a delicate track and one that we will continue to evaluate. With a nearly 24 hour snowfall, it’s reason to be concerned that the upper end or higher of these ranges are possible. There may be a secondary jackpot in the Western Mountains where the snow is fluffy, and accumulation continues through Wednesday.
