CLERMONT, Fla. — Bowdoin’s softball team opened its season Wednesday with two wins, 3-1 over Smith and 10-2 over UMass-Boston.

Lauren O’Shea and Caroline Rice each homered as the Polar Bears rallied past Smith (1-6).

Rachael Newhall hit an RBI single in the second inning to put Smith ahead 1-0.

O’Shea hit a solo homer in the sixth to tie it, and Rice hit a two-run shot in the seventh to drive in the go-ahead runs.

Samantha Roy picked up the win, allowing two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts in four innings.

Against UMass-Boston, O’Shea drove in four runs, with a two-run homer in the first inning of the five-inning win over the Beacons (2-6).

Caroline Rice added two RBI for Bowdoin.

Kate Hoadley got the win, allowing four hits and two earned runs in five innings.

SOUTH FLORIDA 5, MAINE 0: Mia Fung hit a three-run homer and the Bulls (17-12) defeated the Black Bears (6-12) in Tampa, Florida.

Cheyenne Eggens (4-2) picked up the win, allowing one hit with four strikeouts over 31/3 innings.

Annie Kennedy (2-3) took the loss, allowing four hits and one earned run with three strikeouts in three innings.

SMCC LOSES TWICE: Hannah Marquardt tossed a two-hitter to lead St. Louis Community College (4-4) to a 9-0 win over Southern Maine CC (6-6) in five innings at Cocoa Beach, Florida.

Marquardt (2-1) struck out eight in five innings.

Meranda Martin and Kahli Philibotte each had a hit for SMCC.

The Seawolves lost 17-1 in their second game of the day against County College of Morris.

BASEBALL

ROWAN 16, BOWDOIN 3: The Profs (8-1) scored 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings in a rout of the Polar Bears (1-2) in Lakeland, Florida.

Bowdoin cut the Rowan lead to 5-3 in the fourth inning as Sawyer Billings hit a two-run homer to right-center field that scored Brendan O’Neil.

Eric Mah had two hits for Bowdoin.

Anthony Harrold led Rowan with four hits. Andrew Cartier (1-0) got the win, striking out eight in six innings.

WAUBONSEE CC SWEEPS SMCC: Matt Wantiez struck out 10 and allowed two hits to lead the Chiefs to an 8-2 win over the Seawolves in the first game of a doubleheader in Auburndale, Florida.

In the second game, Garrett Goetz drove in five runs for Waubonsee (6-1) in a 16-1 victory in five innings over SMCC (14-9).

Amos Herrin had two hits for SMCC.

SOUTHERN MAINE 10, MOUNT ST. JOSEPH 9: Zach Quintal and Dylan Hapworth each had three hits and drove in four runs to lead the Huskies (3-2) over the Lions (6-5) in Auburndale, Florida.

Quintal hit a three-run homer in the third to put Southern Maine ahead 5-2, and hit an RBI single in the sixth to extend the lead to 10-5.

Mount St. Joseph scored three runs in the ninth inning to cut the lead to 10-9.

The Lions had the tying run on base when Jake Dexter entered for Southern Maine and struck out the final batter to earn his first save of the season.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BATES 14, WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 13: Curtis Knapton scored his third goal of the game with 2:32 remaining in the second overtime period to lift the Bobcats (2-3) over the Golden Bears (3-2) in Springfield, Massachusetts.

Max Breschi led Bates with four goals, including the tying goal with 43 seconds left in regulation, helping the Bobcats rally from four goals down in the fourth quarter.

Jared Ward scored three goals for Western New England.
