Xavier Munford scored 41 points to lead the Wisconsin Herd to a 118-111 G League win over the Maine Red Claws on Thursday at the Portland Expo.

Maine led 67-65 at the break and 82-75 with 5:44 left in the third before the Herd closed quarter the with an 18-7 run. Wisconsin maintained a comfortable margin for much of the fourth, though Maine twice got to within four.

Anthony Bennett led the Red Claws with 26 points, followed by Daniel Dixon with 24 and L.J. Peak with 21.

Maine’s Devin Williams had 16 rebounds and finished with 13 points.

ROAD RACING

BOSTON MARATHON: The Boston Marathon will add a commemorative relay this year to mark the 100th anniversary of the year World War I interrupted the regular, 26.2-mile race.

Sixteen active and retired members of the military will pass a baton along the course on April 16 while 30,000 runners make their way from Hopkinton to Boston. The relay runners will represent five branches of the service and all eight cities and towns along the course.

The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest and most prestigious annual race at the distance. It was first run in 1897. But in 1918, with many of the nation’s fittest men at war, the Boston Athletic Association staged a 10-man relay to keep the tradition going. It was won by a group from Camp Devens in central Massachusetts.

TENNIS

BNP PARIBAS OPEN: Venus Williams defeated Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 6-2 to reach the semifinals at Indian Wells, California, where she first broke out as a 16-year-old qualifier in 1997.

Williams, the oldest player in the draw at 37, has never reached the final of the desert tournament. To do so she’ll have to get by 20-year-old Russian Daria Kasatkina, who has yet to drop a set in four matches.

Kasatkina needed just 58 minutes to dispatch former No. 1 Angelique Kerber 6-0, 6-2 in the quarterfinals.

The Russian has knocked out U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens and No. 2-ranked Caroline Wozniacki on the way.

COLLEGES

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Georgia hired former Indiana coach Tom Crean as its coach, capping a fast-paced search that began when Mark Fox was fired on Saturday.

Crean had a 356-231 record in 18 seasons at Marquette and Indiana from 1999-2017.

SKIING

WORLD CUP: Having packed away the downhill title a day earlier, Sofia Goggia claimed victory in the final super-G of the season on Thursday in Are, Sweden.

Goggia dominated, finishing 0.32 seconds ahead of Viktoria Rebensburg of Germany.

Lindsey Vonn was faster than Goggia at the first checkpoint but lost her balance briefly midway down and finished third, 0.53 behind.

Tina Weirather placed sixth to defend her overall title in the discipline.

• Vincent Kriechmayr made it two wins in two days by taking the final men’s super-G, finishing a narrow 0.04 seconds ahead of Christof Innerhofer in a shortened race.

AUTO RACING

FOYT HOSPITALIZED: Four-time Indianapolis 500 winner A.J. Foyt was briefly hospitalized after an attack of Africanized killer bees he encountered while working on his ranch near Houston.

A.J. Foyt Racing said in a statement the 83-year-old was released from a Texas hospital once he was stabilized.
