GENESEO, N.Y. — Justin Grillo scored with less than two seconds remaining to give Colby a 2-1 win over SUNY-Geneseo in the NCAA Division III men’s hockey quarterfinals Saturday night.

Cam MacDonald started the winning play with a behind-the-back pass to Thomas Stahlhuth, whose shot was blocked by Geneseo defender Cam Russell. Grillo collected the loose puck, however, and wristed it past goalie Devin McDonald.

Colby (17-10-2) will play top-ranked St. Norbert in the semifinals Friday in Lake Placid, New York.

Stahlhuth scored the first goal on a two-on-one break when he redirected a pass from Grillo 40 seconds into the second period.

The Knights (20-6-3) tied it during a two-man advantage at 8:18 of the third period, as Arthur Gordon one-timed a pass from Andrew Romano.

Colby’s Sean Lawrence made 38 saves, including 17 in the third period when the Mules were outshot, 18-4.

HOCKEY EAST: Boston University scored twice in the third period to defeat Providence 2-0 in the championship game in Boston.

Drew Melanson broke the scoreless deadlock 56 seconds into the third period, and Bobo Carpenter added an unassisted empty-netter with 1:22 left.

Jake Oettinger made 30 saves for the Terriers (21-13-4), who earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Providence (23-11-4) also is expected to get a bid when the 16-team field is announced Sunday.

SOFTBALL

MAINE WINS TWICE: Maddie Decker’s three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning gave the Black Bears (8-14) the lead for good in a 5-3 win over Florida Gulf Coast (22-5) at Clearwater, Florida.

With Maine trailing 3-1, Rachel Carlson and Laurine German hit back-to-back singles to open the fifth. Decker then blasted a 2-2 pitch from Marissa Mesiemore for her third home run of the season.

The Black Bears added a run in the seventh on a bases-loaded single by Erika Leonard. Maine’s other run scored on a double by Alyssa Derrick in the first inning.

Kyleigh O’Donnell (2-5) got the win after relieving Lilly Volk during Florida Gulf Coast’s three-run third. O’Donnell allowed two hits and three walks while striking out three.

Leonard and German finished with two hits apiece. German scored two runs.

Maine beat Florida A&M 7-6 in eight innings earlier in the day.

BASEBALL

USM SPLITS: Southern Maine sent 13 men to the plate in the bottom of the seventh inning and scored seven runs – all after the first two batters were retired – as they pulled away from Westfield State (6-6-1) for an 11-2 win at Auburndale, Florida.

Andrew Olszak went 2 for 5 and drove in three runs, and Zach Quintal and Jake Dexter each added a pair of hits.

In its second game of the day, USM (4-5) lost 15-14 against Oswego State (8-5), which got the winning run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.

Olszak again led the Huskies’ offense, going 4 for 6 with four RBI. Quintal had three hits.

NEW MEXICO STATE SWEEPS MAINE: The Aggies (12-8) collected 30 hits and swept the Black Bears (4-16) by scores of 10-6 and 14-7 at Las Cruces, New Mexico.

The Aggies scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 6-6 tie in the first game. Danny Casals was 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI, and Hernen Sardinas also had two hits and two RBI for Maine in the opener.

Maine’s Jeremy Pena scored on a wild pitch in the first inning of the second game, before the Aggies built a 9-1 over the first five innings. Maine got two runs in the sixth on a home run by Brandon Vicens and a passed ball.

Sardinas scored on a sacrifice fly in the eighth, and Maine tacked on three in the ninth on an RBI triple by Cody Pasic followed by a two-run homer by Casals.

MEN’S LACROSSE

BOWDOIN 13, HAMILTON 5: The Polar Bears (2-2, 1-2 NESCAC) built a 6-1 lead and easily handled the Continentals (1-4, 0-3) in Davenport, Florida.

Daniel Buckman, Tim Bulens, Jimmy Young, Matthew Crowell and Sam Langan each scored twice. Buckman also had two assists.

BATES 15, TRINITY 7: The Bobcats (3-3, 1-2 NESCAC) took control with eight consecutive goals to beat the Bantams (1-3, 0-2) in Lewiston.

Matt Chlastawa finished with five goals and added an assist for Bates, while Clarke Jones had three goals and an assist.

TUFTS 20, COLBY 6: Danny Murphy recorded three goals and three assists for the Jumbos (5-0, 3-0 NESCAC) in a win over the Mules (1-3, 1-3) at Medford, Massachusetts.

C.J. Hassan scored twice for Colby, which trailed 11-1 at halftime.

MASS. MARITIME 11, ST. JOSEPH’S 8: The Buccaneers (1-1) opened the fourth quarter with four straight goals to take the lead for good against the Monks (1-4) in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts.

Michael Finn led St. Joseph’s with three goals and an assist. Luigi Grimaldi scored twice, and Brendan Barrett added a goal and three assists.

NORWICH 10, SOUTHERN MAINE 6: The Cadets (2-2) ended the third quarter with four consecutive goals to break open a close game against the Huskies (1-2) in Gorham.

Bryce Randall scored twice for USM.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE

TRINITY 12, BATES 2: Kiley Coffey recorded four of her five goals in the first half as the third-ranked Bantams (4-1) defeated the Bobcats (3-3) in a nonconference game in Hartford, Connecticut.

Katie Allard and Summer Dias scored for Bates.
