A wind-driven, smoky fire that could be seen from miles away caused extensive damage Sunday to a two-story house in Brunswick.

Capt. Matthew Barnes said Sunday night that the cause of the fire at 1036 Mere Point Road remains under investigation, but added that it does not appear to be suspicious.

When the fire broke out around 1 p.m., the house was not occupied.

No injuries were reported, but fire crews from several towns spent the afternoon and evening at the fire scene.

There were no hydrants nearby, so the road had to be shut down temporarily to allow firefighters to haul in tanks of water.

Barnes said the fire response was also slowed by arcing power lines. Crews had to wait for Central Maine Power to shut down electricity.

Firefighters also had to cut through the home’s metal roof, which Barnes said held the fire inside the structure.

Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to an attached two-car garage.
