Houlton High senior Kolleen Bouchard was named the Gatorade Maine girls’ basketball player of the year on Monday.

Bouchard, who was previously honored as Maine Miss Basketball, led the Shiretowners to a state championship game for the fourth straight season. Her teams won two state titles in her career, one in Class B and one in Class C.

Bouchard averaged 29.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 5.5 assists, 3.3 steals and 2.9 blocks per game this season. She finished her career with 2,046 points.

She will next play at Bentley University.

TENNIS

MIAMI OPEN: Naomi Osaka, a rising star who won Indian Wells on Sunday, will face Serena Williams in the first round at Key Biscayne on Wednesday – a freakishly difficult way for both to start a tournament.

The marquee matchup at the outset came about because neither player is seeded. Osaka is ranked a career-best No. 22, and Williams is ranked No. 491 after becoming a mother and returning to the tour at Indian Wells following a layoff of more than a year.

Osaka, a 20-year-old slugger from Japan, earned the biggest victory when she beat Daria Kasatkina in the Indian Wells final.

COLLEGES

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Former Memphis All-American Penny Hardaway is heading back to his alma mater.

Memphis will announce Hardaway as its next coach on Tuesday, said a person familiar with the situation. Memphis hasn’t publicly announced the hire but has scheduled a news conference for Tuesday.

The 46-year-old Hardaway replaces Tubby Smith, who was fired after going 40-26 in two seasons with Memphis.

Hardaway is a four-time NBA All-Star and three-time All-NBA player who will be making his college coaching debut with the Tigers.

WORLD CUP: Mikaela Shiffrin topped the prize money list after winning 12 races in the season and retained her women’s overall title.

The International Ski Federation says the American star earned almost 703,000 Swiss francs ($738,000).

Men’s overall champion Marcel Hirscher of Austria, who won 13 races, was second with prize earnings of almost 670,000 francs ($703,000).

Lindsey Vonn of the United States earned 264,000 francs ($277,000), including five first-place prizes, and had the fifth-highest earnings.

GOLF

U.S. WOMEN’S OPEN: Two-time champion Karrie Webb has received a special exemption to the tournament that starts May 31 at Shoal Creek in Alabama.

Webb won consecutive titles by a combined 13 shots in 2000 and 2001 when she was at the top of her game.

She beat Cristie Kerr and Meg Mallon by five shots at The Merit Club outside Chicago in 2000 and Se Ri Pak by eight shots at Pine Needles in North Carolina a year later.

U.S. MEN’S TEAM: Mexican league midfielder Kekuta Manneh has been added to the U.S. roster for a March 27 exhibition against Paraguay at Cary, North Carolina.

The 27-year-old was born in Ghana and became a U.S. citizen two years ago while he played with Vancouver.

He was traded to Columbus in March 2017 and signed with Pachuca in December.
