Spieth, Reed advance in Match Play event

Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed won their matches for a second straight day Thursday to set up a Friday showdown to determine who wins the group and advances to the weekend at the Dell Technologies Match Play at Austin, Texas.

Spieth never trailed against Li Haotong and pulled away for a 4 and 2 victory.

Reed trailed Charl Schwartzel at the turn, then won the next two holes to set up a tight finish. Schwartzel was 1 down when he missed a 5-foot par putt on the 17th. Then, needing a birdie on the 18th to halve, Schwartzel could only watch as Reed hit a wedge that nearly went in and stopped inches away.

PGA: Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, played a four-hole stretch in 5 over on the back nine that led to a 5-over 77 in the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship in the Dominican Republic. He was 14 shots behind Brice Garnett, who had a 63 to lead by one shot.

LPGA: Laura Davies, four days after contending for a title at age 54, had a 10-over 82, and Caroline Hedwall and Jackie Stoelting topped the Kia Classic leaderboard with 66s at Carlsbad, California.

TENNIS

MIAMI OPEN: Top-ranked Simona Halep of Romania struggled to post a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 second-round win over Oceane Dodin of France at Key Biscayne, Florida.

Also, former No. 1 Angelique Kerber of Germany advanced to the third round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Johanna Larsson of Sweden.

MLS: Zlatan Ibrahimovic signed a two-year contract with Major League Soccer to leave Manchester United and join the LA Galaxy.

Ibrahimovic, a 36-year-old forward, is Sweden’s career scoring leader with 62 goals in 116 international appearances and is the first player to make Champions League appearances for seven teams.

n Juventus of Turin, which leads the Italian league as it pursues a seventh straight title, will play in Major League Soccer’s All-Star Game in Atlanta on Aug. 1.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Paris Saint-Germain must close part of its stadium at the next game it hosts as punishment for fans lighting flares and fireworks.

FIGURE SKATING

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Olympic gold medalists Aliona Savchenko and Bruno Massot of Germany set a world record as they claimed their first world title as a pair with a flawless program packed with daring and grace at Assago, Italy.

In the men’s competition, Nathan Chen of the United States neatly vanquished the ghosts of the Olympic short program to finish first going into the final freestyle.

JOCKEY DIES: Jose Flores, 56, who won 4,650 races in a career that spanned more than three decades, died of injuries suffered Monday in a racing accident at Parx, a suburban Philadelphia track.

Flores was racing when his horse went down and Flores was thrown off. The jockey hit the ground headfirst and suffered a massive trauma.

BOXING

GUILTY PLEA: Paul Spadafora, a former lightweight champion, pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and simple assault on police officers who responded to a domestic dispute at his Pittsburgh home in 2016.

Authorities said Spadafora, 42, challenged the officers to fight, tried to push one down the stairs and spit on another.
