To keep winter weather’s impact from pushing the last day of school to the end of June, Regional School Unit 1 will be ending Late Start Wednesdays this month.

Starting April 25, there will be no more late starts for the rest of the school year, Superintendent Patrick Manuel wrote in a letter to families.

“In an effort to end the school year on a reasonable date that promotes optimal instruction, we have decided to cancel Late Start Wednesdays from April 25th through the remainder of the school year,” said Manuel. “Therefore, there will be no more Late Start Wednesdays after we return from April break. By doing this, the last day of school for students will be Monday, June 18th.”

RSU 1 has racked up nine days of missed school, with days off starting much earlier this year when an October wind storm knocked out power for much of the Midcoast for nearly a week. That resulted in the district canceling school for three consecutive days.

Once winter weather arrived, the timing of storms meant more missed days, with the district dealing with nine in total. It was able to make up one of those days by cancelling a professional development day in January and replacing it with a regular school day.
