Former Maine Teacher of the Year Karen MacDonald succinctly pointed out, in her recent Maine Voices column (March 29), why our schools need to continue to overcome the obstacles and move forward implementing proficiency-based learning.

This long-overdue change, stressing learning, has not been without its challenges. Nonetheless, in my district, the result of our efforts implementing proficiency-based learning has resulted in higher-quality instruction and focused learning opportunities for our students. I concur with Karen MacDonald that we should not abandon an educational approach that will empower our learners for success today and tomorrow.
