Binghamton holds off Sea Dogs to finish sweep

Nabil Crismatt dominated for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Sunday, striking out nine over six scoreless innings in a 4-3 Eastern League victory over the Portland Sea Dogs that completed a season-opening sweep at Binghamton, New York.

Crismatt allowed only one hit, Cole Sturgeon’s double to start the game, and then retired 13 straight before Jordan Betts reached on a fielding error with one out in the fifth inning.

John Mora and Peter Alonso homered for the Rumble Ponies (3-0).

The Sea Dogs (0-3) scored their runs in the eighth on two-out doubles from Jeremy Rivera, Sturgeon and Josh Tobias’ line single to left.

Portland starts a three-game series at Reading, Pennsylvania, on Monday.

U.S. WOMEN’S TEAM: Carli Lloyd became the sixth American to score 100 international goals, putting the United States ahead as it rallied for a 6-2 win over Mexico in an exhibition at Houston.

Alex Morgan scored twice for the second straight game as the Americans played another prep match ahead of World Cup qualifying in October.

Megan Rapinoe chipped the goalkeeper to score from 35 yards and had four assists, one short of the U.S. record.

Lloyd, a 35-year-old midfielder, became the 16th woman to reach the century mark.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Chelsea appears increasingly unlikely to qualify for the Champions League after being held 1-1 by West Ham in London.

DAVIS CUP: David Ferrer sealed Spain’s 3-2 comeback win over Germany in the quarterfinals with a thrilling five-set victory against Philipp Kohlschreiber at Valencia, Spain.

Ferrer needed nearly five hours to defeat Kohlschreiber 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-5, and put Spain in the semifinals for the first time since 2012. Spain will face France, which defeated Italy 3-1.

Top-ranked Rafael Nadal cruised to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win over fourth-ranked Alexander Zverev in the first match to keep Spain alive.

n Ryan Harrison wrapped up a 4-0 victory for the United States over Belgium, beating Ruben Bemelmans 6-3, 6-4 in 65 minutes at Nashville, Tennessee.

The U.S. had already clinched a semifinal berth and will face Croatia on Sept. 14-16. Croatia advanced after Marin Cilic put away Mikhail Kukushkin 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 to seal a 3-1 win over Kazakhstan.

CYCLING

PARIS-ROUBAIX: Belgian rider Michael Goolaerts died of cardiac arrest after collapsing while competing in the race.

Goolaerts’ team said the 23-year-old died in a Lille hospital where he had been taken by helicopter from the one-day classic.

Goolaerts had been airlifted to hospital after collapsing about 93 miles from the finish.

Peter Sagan won the race ahead of Silvan Dillier of Switzerland.

WRESTLING

WORLD CUP: The United States won the title for the first time in 15 years, beating Azerbaijan in the final.

The victory marked the second consecutive major international tournament won by the Americans, who won the team crown at last year’s world championships.
