ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shohei Ohtani retired the Oakland Athletics’ first 19 batters and yielded one hit over seven shutout innings in his home pitching debut Sunday, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-1 victory.

Marcus Semien’s clean one-out single to left broke up Ohtani’s bid for a perfect game. Ohtani finished with 12 strikeouts.

Ohtani (2-0) struck out the side twice.

He won his pitching debut in Oakland last weekend with six strong innings and homered in three consecutive games in Anaheim between starts in his attempt to become the first regular two-way player in decades.

ORIOLES 8, YANKEES 7: Brad Brach escaped his own bases-loaded, no-out jam in the 12th inning and Baltimore overcame an early deficit at New York.

After Brach walked two batters and fumbled a bunt for an error, he got Aaron Judge to ground into a rare pitcher-to-catcher-to-third double play and struck out Giancarlo Stanton for his second save.

On an afternoon with a first-pitch temperature of 36 degrees and a 10 mph wind blowing straight in, the teams combined for five hits – all singles – and none after the third inning.

INDIANS 3, ROYALS 1: Yan Gomes hit a tie-breaking two-run homer off Brandon Maurer in the ninth inning, lifting Cleveland at home.

Gomes drove a 3-2 pitch barely over the 19-foot wall in left field, ending another tough day for Cleveland’s offense on a high note. Gomes was mobbed by his teammates at home plate after just the fourth hit of the day for the Indians.

BLUE JAYS 7, RANGERS 4: Steve Pearce homered on Cole Hamels’ first pitch of the game, Kendrys Morales added a three-run shot in the first inning and Toronto won at Arlington, Texas.
