A deputy with the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office was injured Sunday night after a car traveling on Route 27 in Belgrade veered into the breakdown lane and struck the rear end of the deputy’s cruiser, police said.
The driver, Schuyler Mann, 28, of South Portland, fell asleep before his car struck the police cruiser, according to a news release from Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police.
No charges were filed after the crash, McCausland added.
The deputy, 36-year-old Jeremy York, “was parked in the southbound breakdown lane in his fully marked 2018 Dodge Charger patrol vehicle,” McCausland said.
Both York and a passenger in Mann’s car, Katherine Hynd, 27, of South Portland, were taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.
York was treated and released from the hospital, but McCausland didn’t indicate whether Hynd has been released.
The crash was reported just after 6:15 p.m. on Sunday. Mann was driving a 2004 Pontiac Vibe in the southbound lane when it happened.
“It was determined that Mann was fatigued and fell asleep prior to the crash,” McCausland said.
The Kennebec County Sheriff’s Office and state olice responded to the crash. State police were still reconstructing the crash scene on Monday morning. The Belgrade Fire Department also assisted.
