MONTPELIER, Vt. – A number of students from a Vermont high school made their way to the state’s capital to argue against the possible release of a student who authorities say planned to shoot up the school and cause mass casualties.
Fair Haven Union High School students were in Montpelier on Wednesday to ask legislators to update criminal statutes that currently allow for the possible release of 18-year-old Jack Sawyer.
The Vermont Supreme Court recently ruled for Sawyer’s case that “preparation alone” did not prove an attempt at aggravated murder, arguing he couldn’t be kept in jail without bail.
A judge set bail at $100,000 for Sawyer.
Republican Gov. Phil Scott said legislators plan to update state law to address the Sawyer case.
Sawyer has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
