BRUNSWICK — Bates scored six runs with two outs in the top of the fifth inning Friday to beat Bowdoin 6-4 in a NESCAC softball game.

Bowdoin (22-8, 7-3 NESCAC) built a 3-0 lead on RBI singles from Samantha Valdivia in the second, Claire McCarthy in the third and Jordan Gowdy in the fourth.

Payton Buxton walked to lead off the fifth for Bates (16-10, 2-5), and after the next two batters were retired, six straight reached base, including doubles from Julia Panepinto and Mary Collette.

UNE SPLITS WITH EASTERN NAZARENE: Caroline Schoenbucher lined a two-run single to center to give the University of New England (16-14, 9-5 Commonwealth Coast) a 2-1 victory and a split of a doubleheader at Biddeford.

Eastern Nazarene got a two-run double in the second inning from Rebecca Ashman and a sacrifice fly from Dominique Santo in the seventh as it won the opener, 3-0.

TRINITY 15, COLBY 4: Samantha Witmer and Katie Haghdan each drove in three runs to lead the Bantams (15-11, 4-3 NESCAC) to a five-inning victory over the Mules (2-20, 0-7) in Hartford, Connecticut.

SMCC SPLITS WITH CCRI: Madison Eastman went 3 for 4 with four RBI as Southern Maine C.C. (14-14) beat Community College of Rhode Island 14-7 in the first game of a doubleheader at South Portland.

Kristen Mackenzie added three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs for the Seawolves.

CCRI (7-13) won the second game, 9-1 in six innings.

BASEBALL

BATES 8, TRINITY 7: Giovanni Torres and Jack Arend each had two hits and two RBI as the Bobcats (11-2, 4-3 NESCAC) defeated the Bantams (14-10, 7-3) at Hartford, Connecticut.

Johnny Stamatis finished with two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for Trinity, which scored six runs in the sixth inning.

THOMAS 6, BOWDOIN 5: Hank Vinall doubled and hit a sacrifice fly to drive in four runs, and Tristina Pena had a pinch-hit walk-off single in the 10th inning to lift the Terriers (4-24) over the Polar Bears (11-13) at Waterville.

John Villanueva had two hits and reached on an error in the bottom of the ninth to bring home the tying run for the Terriers.

Bowdoin’s Jack Wilhoite had a home run and two RBI.

TUFTS 22, COLBY 7: Malcolm Nachmanoff was 3 for 3 with a pair of solo home runs and scored four runs to lead the Jumbos (13-10, 4-3 NESCAC) over the Mules (5-16, 1-6) at Medford, Massachusetts.

Will Phillips went 3 for 5 with a triple for Colby.

ST. JOSEPH’S SPLITS WITH LASELL: Greg Emanuelson blasted a three-run homer to highlight a five-run first inning as St. Joseph’s (20-8, 5-1) opened an 11-0 lead and cruised past Lasell 11-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Northborough, Massachusetts.

The Monks broke the game open in the fourth, getting a two-run homer from Jacob White that was followed one out later by a solo shot from Noah McDaniel.

McDaniel was 3 for 4 with two RBI for St. Joseph’s, and White finished 2 for 5, driving in three runs.

The Monks fell to the Lasers (6-17, 5-5) in the second game, 1-0, as Zach Handzel went the distance.

Jared Gagne had two hits for St. Joseph’s.

SOUTHERN MAINE C.C. 8, GREAT BAY CC 2: Devin Sawyer pitched a one-hitter to lead the Seawolves (21-12, 5-0 YSCC) over the Herons (8-11, 2-2) in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Sawyer lost his no-hit bid in the ninth inning.
