One of the many reasons I support Democrat Adam Cote for governor is that I believe he, more than any other candidate for governor, is uniquely positioned to address the need for sensible gun laws.

In 2014, President Obama named Adam a “Champion of Change” as a veteran working to advance clean energy and climate security. And many of us are excited about Adam’s commitment to the environment and his focus on clean energy. However, I believe Adam will also be the champion of change we need to craft better gun laws in Maine.

As a 20-year veteran of military service, having served in combat in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan, Adam is completely familiar with assault weapons. He grew up hunting in Maine and is a lifelong gun owner. It is Adam’s experience with firearms, both hunting and assault weapons, that puts him in a unique position to talk about gun-safety measures with gun owners and hunters, and he is committed to working with them to craft changes to our laws that make sense. As Adam says, “If you are not in combat, I do not believe you need combat firepower.”

I urge Maine residents who finally want something done about this important issue to look at Adam’s record and support his candidacy for governor.
