William Hood
A South Portland man who appeared to be planning a bank robbery Saturday morning was arrested by Scarborough police.
William Hood, 49, has been charged with criminal attempt of armed robbery, according to a post on the Scarborough Police Department Facebook page.
Police received a report of a suspicious person at a local bank at about 10:44 a.m. Saturday. The tipster told dispatch that a man wearing a black sweatshirt and a knitted cap with sunglasses entered the bank that morning. He did not remove his sunglasses or hat, walked up to the station, grabbed withdrawal slips and left the bank, which police did not identify.
Officers arrived on scene within minutes and began searching the surrounding area. An eyewitness told police about seeing the man enter the woods. At approximately 10:59 a.m., officers found Hood in the woods beside the bank. He had a knife, a money deposit bag, two withdrawal slips and a robbery note, police said.
Hood was arrested without incident and taken to Cumberland County Jail.
