I just read Marina Schauffler’s April 15 Sea Change column, on the Maine towns and cities that place fees on plastic bags.
After several years, Portland has left the job half done, with the fee applying only to stores involved in selling food. This means all those other retailers get a pass.
When I see plastic bags in the trees, it reminds me that Portland promised to put all retailers under the same fee regulation, but it has been kicked down the road.
Yes, I have contacted city councilors on more than one occasion, but I’ve only heard crickets. Come on, Portland City Council, fair is fair – do your job and keep your promise to cover all retailers.
