Portland firefighters knocked down a fire at a single-family home on Pitt Street Monday that destroyed the kitchen of the home.

Portland Deputy Chief Terry Walsh said multiple people inside the home at 36 Pitt St. were outside when the first engines arrived around 9 a.m., but firefighters rescued dogs that were still inside.

The fire was quickly contained, and now an investigator is working to determine the cause, Walsh said.
