Ryan Metzler broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning with a two-run homer, Mylz Jones followed with a solo shot, and the Yard Goats snuck by the Portland Sea Dogs 4-1 in an Eastern League game at Hartford, Connecticut, on Tuesday night.

Hartford (9-9) took a 1-0 lead on Yonathan Daza’s RBI single in the third.

The Sea Dogs (6-11) countered in the fifth when Danny Mars singled in Luke Tendler.

Hartford’s bullpen pitched four scoreless innings, striking out four.

FOOTBALL: Bates Coach Mark Harriman announced that he is stepping down, effective May 30.

The Westbrook native has coached the Bobcats since 1998, and guided the program to seven Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series titles, including the last four.

He was named the NESCAC co-coach of the Year in 2012, when Bates went 5-3, the first of three consecutive .500-or-better season for Bobcats, the program’s best such streak since 1979.

Harriman, who has an overall record of 46-115, had also served as an assistant athletic director at Bates since 2005.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: The University of Maine has signed European forwards Solomon Iluyomade and Vilgot Larsson.

Iluyomade, of London, played for Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming, where he averaged 6.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in 12 starts.

Larsson, of Stockholm, averaged 6.5 points and 4.1 rebounds in 26 starts with Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas.

Both will enroll in the fall as sophomores and are eligible to play immediately.

SOCCER

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Mohamed Salah produced two world-class finishes and set up goals for Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino to lead host Liverpool to a 5-2 win over former club Roma, leaving the English team in sight of the final.

Liverpool scored all of its goals in a breathtaking 33-minute spell either side of halftime in the first leg of its semifinal against the Italian club.

BARCELONA OPEN: David Goffin saved a match point to defeat Marcel Granollers of Spain 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 in the second round.

Goffin was down 5-1 in the second set before recovering to reach the third round for the second consecutive year in Barcelona.

Ecuador Open champion Roberto Carballes Baena of Spain defeated Andreas Haider-Maurer of Austria 6-2, 6-4 to set up a second-round encounter with 10-time champion Rafael Nadal.

Sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic will play his second-round match against Slovak Martin Klizan, who defeated Argentine Federico Delbonis 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-4.

Tour veteran Feliciano Lopez of Spain defeated Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in a second-round match, while Malek Jaziri of Tunisia beat American Ernesto Escobedo 6-4, 6-3.

HOCKEY

NHL: The Buffalo Sabres signed Victor Olofsson to a two-year contract after he scored a Swedish Hockey League-leading 27 goals last season.

Olofsson was selected by the Sabres in the seventh round of the 2014 draft. The forward has spent the past three seasons in the SHL, collecting 50 goals and 49 assists in 150 regular-season games. Overall, Olofsson had 60 goals and 117 points in 200 games.
