The building that housed the former Outliers Eatery at 231 York St. on Portland’s West End has been purchased by a couple who plan to turn it into a health and wellness center, according to the broker who handled the deal. A cafe may be part of the plan. A game of phone tag with the new owners, however, ended in a draw. Keep an eye on this space for more details.

Plans and (please?) flans

Lorraine Fagela, founder of Cornerstone Food Co. in Falmouth, tells us she hopes to open her new Westbrook eatery, to be called Roots Cafe, in mid-July. Our Dine Out restaurant critic, Andrew Ross, annointed her salted caramel flan cake as the best gluten-free dessert he tasted in 2017. That same dessert, which Ross described as “a wobbly layer of Japanese custard pudding, a smooth Filipino flan and a salted caramel topping” – drooling yet? – also won the Maine’s Best Baker contest last year. No word if it will be on the menu at the Roots Cafe, but it sure sounds delicious paired with a cup of the organic, Fair Trade coffee Fagela plans on serving. The cafe will be located at 20 School St.

Pinot perfection

A former Harpswell resident is the winemaker behind a Willamette Valley pinot noir awarded a perfect 100-point score last week by Wine Enthusiast magazine. Jim Anderson, who co-founded Patricia Green Cellars in Newberg, Oregon, grew up on Great Island in Harpswell, attended Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham and is a 1988 graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick. Patricia Green Cellars is just the third U.S. winery to ever be awarded a perfect score. It is also Oregon’s largest producer of sauvignon blanc.

The Patricia Green Cellars 2016 Estate Vineyard, Bonshaw Block Pinot Noir is available in Maine through wholesale distributor South Portland Wine Company.

The Wine Enthusiast described it as “immensely deep, dark and textural with complex aromas that instantly draw one in. Its complex berry, plum jam and baking spice scents come with underlying mineral and earth notes. It hits the palate with a powerfully woven matrix of lush flavors: blueberry, plum, cherry, chocolate, butterscotch and toasted coconut. It’s thick, supple and lingering – an ethereal and extraordinary wine.”

The winery itself no longer has any bottles. According to its website, the $60 bottle is sold out – not surprising, given that luscious description.

New meaning to having a cold one

Had a tough week? Gorgeous Gelato to the rescue. The gelateria has just introduced a line of boozy gelato cocktails, including the Maine Blueberry Dream, which combines Blueshine (the blueberry moonshine from Maine Craft Distilling) with fresh blueberries, lemon gelato and soda water.
