YARMOUTH—Yarmouth’s boys’ lacrosse team has the opportunity to produce a special season this spring and at the quarter-pole, the Clippers are doing exactly that.

Tuesday evening, one week after a historic and therapeutic upset win at nemesis Cape Elizabeth, Yarmouth hosted crosstown rival North Yarmouth Academy and the prospect of a letdown went quickly by the wayside as the Clippers rolled to another impressive victory.

Yarmouth went on top to stay two minutes in when sophomore Anders Corey hinted at a huge night to come with the game’s first goal.

Sophomore Gavin Hamm added a man-up goal later in the first period and in the second quarter, the Clippers completely took over.

Corey put on a show, scoring five times before setting up senior Silas Chappell for a goal just before the horn and Yarmouth enjoyed an 8-0 lead at the break.

To the Panthers’ credit, they hung tough in the third quarter, getting goals from junior Ryan Baker and senior Connor Clock, but the Clippers got tallies from senior Joe Truesdale, Corey and junior Connor Senger to take an 11-2 advantage to the final stanza.

There, Yarmouth got goals from senior Justin Winkel, Hamm and Chappell to finish off a 14-2 victory.

The Clippers beat NYA for the 13th consecutive time, improved to 3-0 on the young season and in the process, handed the Panthers their first loss in four outings.

“We got off to a little bit of a slow start, but the boys sensed how important a rivalry this was and they dug in,” said Yarmouth coach David Pearl. “I was impressed with our second quarter. We exploded and played the way we wanted to. When we were able to settle it down, we played really well.”

Surging

Yarmouth has lost in the Class B state final five years running, but this spring, the Clippers could be poised to finally finish the job.

Yarmouth not only has a talented squad, one that will only get better over the next six weeks, but the Clippers no longer have the daunting task of having to get through Cape Elizabeth and Falmouth (who have moved up to Class A) in the postseason.

Yarmouth opened the season with an 8-4 win at Greely, then last Tuesday, ended an eight-year, 20-game skid against Cape Elizabeth with a 7-6 victory at the Capers.

“That was a huge boost for us,” Corey said. “It felt great, especially with our fans there.”

“Going up against a team like Cape Elizabeth, that’s an opportunity to pull out all the stops and the guys did,” said Pearl. “That gave us a lot of confidence, but we won’t get too full of ourselves because we know they’ll come back here to our field later in the season.”

NYA, meanwhile, was off to its best start since its last state championship season of 2007, as it downed visiting Lake Region (15-3), host Freeport (12-5) and visiting Gardiner (9-8, in overtime).

Last year, the Clippers beat the visiting Panthers, 15-6, to make it 12 in a row in the series.

Tuesday, NYA sought is first win over Yarmouth since an 8-7 upset victory in the 2012 Eastern B Final, but the Clippers had the better of the play most of the way.

Corey scored the game’s first goal with 10 minutes to play in the first quarter and Yarmouth was on top to stay.

The Panthers had a great chance to answer, but Clippers sophomore goalie Spencer King robbed NYA sophomore Reese Farrell point blank after a turnover.

With 2:45 left in the frame, after a slashing penalty on Panthers sophomore Brendan Bolduc, Truesdale set up Hamm for a goal and a 2-0 lead.

As time wound down in the quarter, Corey hit the post and NYA junior goalie Will Tatge denied Chappell and Hamm.

Yarmouth broke it open in the second period, as Corey went wild.

Just 16 seconds in, Corey finished a feed from junior Andrew Garrett to stretch the lead to three.

The Clippers added a man-up goal with 10:47 to play in the half, as Truesdale set up Corey.

With 7:15 left in the half, Corey scored again, this time set up by Chappell.

The sixth goal came with 6:09 remaining, as Corey finished a feed from junior Michael Guertler.

Then, 10 seconds later, after a faceoff win from junior Griffin Primeau, Primeau set up Corey for another goal and a 7-0 advantage.

It looked like that would be the score entering the break, but just before the horn, Corey passed to Chappell, who beat Tatge to make it 8-0 at halftime.

In the first 24 minutes, Yarmouth had a 15-2 advantage in shots on frame.

NYA wouldn’t roll over in the third period and found the net a couple times, but the Clippers didn’t relent.

It took 76 seconds into the second half for Yarmouth to score again, as Truesdale scored off a pass from Guertler.

The Panthers snapped a 29-minute, 17-second drought when Baker scored unassisted with 6:43 on the clock, but just 28 seconds later, Corey scored his final goal (courtesy sophomore Preston Jancovic). 

With 1:35 left in the third, Clock scored unassisted, but with 8 seconds remaining, Senger scored unassisted to make it 11-2.

The fourth quarter featured an abundance of penalties and three more goals, unassisted tallies from Winkel with 4:37 to play and Hamm with 3:44 to go and a goal from Chappell, set up by Corey with 2:59 remaining, a goal which brought the curtain down on the Clippers’ 14-2 triumph.

“We were forcing it at the beginning, then we slowed it down and got in our offense and did our rotation like we practice,” Corey said. “We’re starting a lot better than last year. The coaches have done a good job of getting our offense down.”

Corey had a sensational game, scoring seven goals and assisting on two others.

“Anders is capable of breaking out,” Pearl said. “He’s accustomed to scoring and he also had three assists against Cape. He’s such a special player. Teams play him strong. Today, he played with a lot of confidence. The sky’s the limit for that young man.”

Chappell and Hamm each had two goals and Senger, Truesdale and Winkel each added one.

Guertler and Truesdale also had a pair of assists and Chappell, Garrett, Jancovic and Primeau had one apiece.

King made six saves and Primeau had a team-high four ground balls.

Yarmouth had a 40-29 shots advantage (24-8 on frame), overcame 15 turnovers and produced yet another stellar defensive performance.

“I have to give credit to our defense,” said Corey. “We go hard in practice. We have good matchups in practice.”

“This defense has more character than I’ve seen before,” Pearl said. “They’ve bonded outside the field and they’ve come together. They do things in unison. They’ve created a hard-nosed attitude.”

NYA got a goal apiece from Baker and Clock, 10 saves from Tatge and a game-high 10 ground balls from Clock. The Panthers won 11 of 19 faceoffs, had a 33-23 advantage in ground balls and turned the ball over 22 times.

“We just couldn’t get anything going early,” lamented NYA coach Glenn Gorden, a one-time Yarmouth Clipper. “We went up against a very good team. They finished their looks and we didn’t. I’m proud we fought to the end.”

Refocusing

NYA hopes to bounce back Saturday at Camden Hills. The Panthers then welcome Freeport Tuesday of next week.

“I’m confident that we’ll bounce back against Camden,” Gorden said. “I couldn’t ask for better kids. We really have a shot this year in Class C.”

Yarmouth has a huge test Friday night when undefeated South Portland (which is coming off an overtime win over defending Class A champion Brunswick) pays a visit in a crossover game. The Clippers then play at York and host Falmouth next week.

“We want to play every game the same, don’t underestimate any opponents, and play our hardest all the time,” Corey said. “I think we have a lot of potential. We have to keep doing our jobs.”

“We’re trying to just put our head down and approach one game at a time,” said Pearl. “It doesn’t get any easier.”
