VASSALBORO — Firefighters from several area communities were sent to put out a structure fire that destroyed a home Friday night in Vassalboro.

A post on the Fire and EMS Facebook page noted that a crew was out with mutual aid from Augusta, Winslow, China and Waterville.

Waterville Fire Capt. Shawn Esler said the department’s cascade truck was sent about 11:30 p.m. to 1834 Riverside Drive in Vassalboro. He said the unit carries air bottles for filling up air packs at the scene.

Capt. Benji Rowe, of the Vassalboro Fire Department, said there were no injuries and no pets were inside the two-story, Cape-style home that he knew of.

He said the home was destroyed.

“When we showed up on scene, the house was pretty much fully engulfed,” Rowe, son of Vassalboro Fire Chief Eric Rowe, said by phone Saturday afternoon. “It’s a total loss.”

He said two people lived in the house. Rowe said it was unknown how the fire started and that investigators from the Office of State Fire Marshal are scheduled to arrive sometime Monday morning.

“When we got there, the northern end of the house was fully engulfed — the porch area,” Rowe said. “Then she spread to the second floor of the house and we tried to go in and knock it down.”

Rowe said the fire was hard to fight because several additions had been attached to the original structure. Firefighters made it upstairs but soon were ordered out of the house, he said.
