Sean Brackett converted a 2-point conversion in overtime Saturday night give the Massachusetts Pirates a 44-43 win over the Maine Mammoths at Worcester, Massachusetts.

With the Mammoths (1-4) trailing 36-32 with 3.7 seconds remaining in regulation, Henry Nell scored two points on a drop kick, then tied it by putting the ensuing kickoff through the uprights for a deuce.

Devin Wilson caught a touchdown pass on the first drive of overtime to give the Mammoths a 43-36 lead. The Pirates (5-1) answered with a rushing TD by Brackett, followed by the conversion.

HOCKEY

NHL: Dustin Byfuglien scored about a minute after the puck dropped and the Winnipeg Jets, at home, built a three-goal lead early in the first period and went on to beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-2 in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals.

Patrik Laine and Joel Armia had goals 46 seconds apart to put the Jets up 3-0. Mark Scheifele gave Winnipeg a 4-1 lead midway through the second period with his 12th goal this postseason.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Canada’s bid for a third title in four years suffered another blow when it lost to Finland 5-1 at Herning, Denmark.

TENNIS

MADRID OPEN: Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic outlasted Kiki Bertens 7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-3 in a grueling final decided when Bertens, an unseeded Dutch player, hit a backhand long on the final point after nearly three hours.

“Everything that I had in my body, I just tried to put it out, even if it was very, very tough today,” said Kvitova, who was playing her 11th match in 13 days after also winning the Prague Open last weekend.

On the men’s side, second-seeded Alexander Zverev brushed aside Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-1 to reach the final against Dominic Thiem, who beat Kevin Anderson, 6-4, 6-2.

SOFTBALL: Berwick Academy fell 13-12 to Lexington Christian Academy in South Berwick.

Emma O’Shaughnessy led Berwick (1-8) with three hits and three RBI. Andrea Caradonna added four hits with two doubles and two RBI, and Delaney Kingsland also had four hits.

SOCCER

MLS: Cristian Penilla scored twice in the first seven minutes and the New England Revolution held off Toronto FC 3-2 at Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Sebastian Giovinco pulled defending champion Toronto within a goal on a penalty kick in the 89th minute. But before the following kickoff, he grabbed Wilfried Zahibo’s face and was ejected.

BOXING

TITLE FIGHT: Vasiliy Lomachenko stopped Jorge Linares in the 10th round of their lightweight championship fight at New York, winning a title in his third weight class in just his 12th pro bout.

Lomachenko landed a hard left to the body during a flurry of precision punches that sent Linares to a knee. Linares finally got up just as the count was reaching 10, but referee Ricky Gonzalez called an end at 2:08 of the round.

GOLF

EUROPEAN TOUR: Mike Lorenzo-Vera of France shot an 8-under-par 63 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Sicilian Open.

Lorenzo-Vera made eight birdies to reach 15 under.
