Damek Tomscha, Jan Hernandez and Malquin Canelo homered, and six of the 10 hits by the Reading Fightin Phils went for extra bases Monday night in a 10-7 victory against the visiting Portland Sea Dogs.

Reading (13-20) took a 3-1 lead in the first inning and Portland (11-23) never caught up.

Tony Renda had three hits for Portland, and Tate Matheny a pair of RBI.

n Outfielder Cole Sturgeon, who has been with the Sea Dogs since 2014, was promoted to Triple-A Pawtucket. Sturgeon, who hit .365 through 31 games, started in center field Monday and scored the tying run as Pawtucket used two runs in the bottom of the 10th to beat Buffalo, 6-5.

ITALIAN LEAGUE: Goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, 40, the captain of Juventus and the Italian national team, will hold a news conference Thursday to announce his retirement.

Buffon helped Juventus win a record-extending seventh straight league championship Sunday. He was the goalkeeper of the Italy team that won the 2006 World Cup.

Roberto Mancini was confirmed as Italy’s new coach to replace Gian Piero Ventura, who was fired in November after the team failed to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in six decades.

WORLD CUP: Defender Rafael Marquez could play in a fifth tournament after he was picked in Mexico’s 28-player preliminary squad.

TENNIS

FRENCH OPEN: Serena Williams’ coach said she will play in the event beginning in two weeks.

The tournament will mark Williams’ first major since returning to the tour from maternity leave.

ITALIAN OPEN: Roberta Vinci, 35, a U.S. Open finalist in 2015 after defeating Serena Williams in the semifinals, bid an emotional farewell following the final match of her career, losing to Serbian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 in the first round at Rome.

Novak Djokovic, who has failed to reach the quarterfinals in six straight tournaments following a right elbow injury, beat Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 6-3 in the first round.

HOCKEY

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Canada bounced back from a loss to Finland by edging Latvia 2-1 in overtime at Herning, Denmark, to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.

Also, the Czech Republic edged Austria 4-3 and Russia shut out Slovakia, 4-0. The United States tops Group B, followed by Finland and Canada. They all secured quarterfinal berths.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Cleveland Browns Coach Hue Jackson plans to jump June 1 into Lake Erie in an event for charity.

As the Browns were staggering toward a winless 2017 season, Jackson vowed if the team didn’t improve on its 1-15 record from the previous year, he would take the plunge. They finished 0-16.

The Detroit Lions signed wide receiver Deontez Alexander, tight end Marcus Lucas and cornerback Josh Okonye.

COLLEGES

SYRACUSE STADIUM: The Carrier Dome at Syracuse University is getting a makeover that will include a new fixed roof and air conditioning.

The university’s board of trustees authorized $118 million for improvements to the dome, the school announced. The money also will be used for a scoreboard, and improved Internet access.
