The short and sweet spring sports season has passed the midway point. There has been plenty of excitement so far and every event will take on added importance in the days to come.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed and a glimpse at what’s to come:

Baseball 

South Portland’s baseball team was 7-2 and had moved up to second in the Class A South Heal Points standings at press time after wins last week over visiting Noble (7-0) and host Cheverus (8-0). Against the Knights, Noah Lewis threw a five-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts for his first varsity win, Riley Hasson had three RBI and Jake Poole broke the game open with a two-run triple in a six-run bottom of the fifth inning.

“It feels really good to get a win,” Lewis said. “It’s fun. I really like this team. I can’t wait to keep going.”

“It was great to see a sophomore come out and pitch like that and lead the team to the win,” Poole said. “He locked in and kept rolling.”

“Noah was the story,” Red Riots coach Mike Owens added. “We know what he’s capable of. I thought he dominated with his fastball. A great performance.”

Hunter Owen earned the victory against the Stags, Hasson had three hits and three RBI and Zach Johnson added two hits and three runs driven in. After hosting Windham in a makeup game Wednesday and Deering Thursday (see theforecaster.net for game story), South Portland plays at top-ranked Portland Saturday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and next week visits Thornton Academy Tuesday and two-time defending regional champion Falmouth Wednesday.

Scarborough 5-5 and fifth in Class A South following a 10-0 win at Kennebunk, a 5-3 home loss to Falmouth and a 15-6 home victory over Marshwood. Brian Austin and Morgan Pratt combined to blank the Ram and Noah Frink and Nick Thompson both drove in a pair of runs. In the loss, the Red Storm scored three times in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough. Frink singled, doubled and scored a run. Against the Hawks, Austin had four RBI, Thompson three and Frink and Jack Clark (the winning pitcher) both produced a pair of hits. Scarborough was home with Thornton Academy Thursday, goes to Sanford for a makeup game Friday, visits Massabesic Saturday and plays at Windham Tuesday of next week. 

In Class B South, Cape Elizabeth has hit a rough patch. The Capers won their first six games, but had lost three of four at press time and were second behind Wells in the Heals. Last week, Cape Elizabeth eked out a 2-1, nine-inning win at Yarmouth, then dropped a bizarre home decision to Wells, 8-6, and Monday, fell to 7-3 with a 4-2 loss at York. In the victory, Carson Sullivan, who didn’t even make it to the game until the fifth inning due to AP testing, earned the win in relief and hit the winning single in the ninth. 

“We’re a motivated team,” Sullivan said. “We cheer each other on. We can get better at everything. Definitely our hitting and stuff in the field too.”

“To grind it out at their place and compete was great,” Capers coach Andy Wood said. “We worked out of jams.”

Against the Warriors, Cape Elizabeth saw a 6-2 lead slip away in the seventh inning and the game ended when it was ruled that the Capers had batted out of order, as Sean Agrodnia made the final out of the bottom of the sixth before leading off in the seventh. Finn Bowe had four hits and scored three runs.

“If this had happened in a playoff game, it would be devastating, but right now, we’ll put it behind us and just get ready for the games coming up,” Bowe said.

In the loss to the Wildcats, the Capers couldn’t hold a 2-0 sixth inning lead. Val Murphy had a run-scoring double. Cape Elizabeth (second in Class B South) looked to bounce back Wednesday at home against Poland before getting another shot at Wells Friday on the road. The Capers welcome Yarmouth Monday.

Softball

Scarborough’s defending Class A champion softball team improved to 12-0 and extended its regular season win streak to 85 games after downing host Portland (11-0), host South Portland (11-2), visiting Marshwood (13-1, in five-innings) and host Westbrook (12-6). Against the Bulldogs, in a rematch of last year’s regional final, Chloe Griffin allowed just two hits and struck out 14 and singled and homered, while Bella Dickinson also hit a home run and Sam Carriero tripled twice. In the win over the Red Riots, Griffin homered and earned the victory, Hunter Greenleaf hit a home run and Dickinson added three hits. Against the Hawks, Greenleaf homered twice Felicia O’Reilly went deep and Dickinson had two hits and earned the victory. In the win over the Blue Blazes, the Red Storm spotted the hosts three first inning runs before rallying behind four hits from Carriero and three from Greenleaf. Scarborough (first in the Class A Heals) hosted Thornton Academy in a potential test Thursday (see theforecaster.net for game story), plays at Biddeford Monday, then hosts Windham Wednesday of next week.

South Portland was 6-6 and ninth in Class A South following a 13-1, five-inning loss at Noble, an 11-2 home loss to Scarborough and a 14-6 victory at Sanford. Maeve Kelley had a pair of hits against the Knights and doubled in the loss to the Red Storm. In the win over the Spartans, Grace Rende homered, doubled and had four RBI and Chloe Grant drove in three runs. The Red Riots went to Thornton Academy Wednesday and play at Windham Monday before returning home Wednesday of next week to meet Westbrook.

In Class B South, Cape Elizabeth was 5-5 and 12th in the Heals after sandwiching wins at Yarmouth (8-3) and York (14-0, in five-innings) around a 7-1 home loss to Wells. Julia Torre had two hits in the loss. Against the Wildcats, Anna Cornell threw a two-hitter, while Torre, Elena Keller and Corinna Page had three hits apiece. The Capers were home with Poland Wednesday, visit Wells Friday, welcome Yarmouth Monday and play at St. Dom’s Wednesday of next week.

Boys’ lacrosse

South Portland’s boys’ lacrosse team dropped its second game in a row, 13-4, at Falmouth last Wednesday, then improved to 5-2 and second in Class A South Friday with a 14-4 home win over Kennebunk. Cooper Mehlhorn had three goals in the loss. In the win, David Fiorini had four goals, while Mehlhorn and Alex Stevens had three apiece. The Red Riots have an interclass showdown at defending Class A champion Cape Elizabeth Friday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and host Thornton Academy in another pivotal battle Wednesday of next week.

Defending Class A South champion Scarborough fell to 1-5 after losses last week to visiting Thornton Academy (17-7) and at Cape Elizabeth (8-2). Marco Manfra had both goals against the Capers. After going to Gorham for a makeup game Thursday, the Red Storm (eighth in Class A South) play host to defending Class B North champion Yarmouth Friday and visit Kennebunk Wednesday of next week.

Cape Elizabeth improved to 4-3 (and third in Class A South) following home wins last week over Greely (9-6) and Scarborough (8-2). In the win over the Rangers, which saw the Capers outscore Greely, 3-0 in the final quarter, Ben Carroll had three goals, while Jacob Brydson and Finn Raymond had two apiece. Sam Dresser had three goals and Killian Lathrop added two against the Red Storm. The Capers went to York for a makeup game Wednesday, welcome South Portland Friday and look to avenge a loss when they go to Yarmouth Wednesday of next week.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, Cape Elizabeth fell to 3-3 last Wednesday after a 9-6 home loss to Yarmouth, but improved to 5-3 and first in Class B after downing visiting Thornton Academy (13-1) and host Waynflete (16-6). Emily Healy scored twice in the loss. Susie Graham scored five times in the win over the Golden Trojans. The Capers then beat the Flyers, their one-time nemesis, for the third consecutive time, as Healy had five goals, Chloe Chapin scored three goals and won 12 of 20 draws and Graham and Karli Chapin each added three goals.

“We played really well today and we knew Waynflete is an incredible team,” Healy said. “All the girls really stepped up. We wanted it badly.”

“We have really good team chemistry this year,” Chloe Chapin said. “We all work as a unit, from the defense to midfield to attack. That really showed on the field today.”

“We came to play today and I couldn’t be happier for my girls,” added Cape Elizabeth coach Alex Spark. “We came out ready to play on both ends.”

The Capers go to defending Class A champion Massabesic Friday and welcome North Yarmouth Academy Tuesday.

In Class A South, Scarborough gave first-year coach Emily Hopkins her first win last week. First, the Red Storm dropped a 13-6 home decision to Falmouth despite three goals from Ellie Smith.

“We’re a strong first half team, but we haven’t been able to finish the last 25 minutes,” Hopkins said. “I was pumped how the first half went.”

Scarborough then blanked visiting Brunswick, 11-0, as Meagan Neelon and Erin Stolz both scored three times. The Red Storm (ninth in Class A South) go to Greely Friday and play at Gorham Monday.

South Portland was 5-3 and third in Class A South following a 14-1 home loss to Massabesic and wins at Wells (13-5) and Bonny Eagle (11-5). Paige Fleming and Jena Leckie both scored three times against the Scots. The Red Riots host two-time defending Class B champion Kennebunk Tuesday of next week.

Outdoor track

Cape Elizabeth hosted a five-team outdoor track meet Friday. The Capers boys came in first and the girls were second.

The boys got wins from Matthew Concannon in the 100 (11.57 seconds), 200 (23.19) and triple jump (38 feet, 7.5 inches), Jack Bassett in the 800 (2 minutes, 12.68 seconds) and mile (4:46.10), Peter DiNinno in the two-mile (10:42.43), Matthew Conley in the high jump (5-10), Jack Fibich in the long jump (17-7.5), Luc Houle in the shot put (41-10.5) and discus (109-6), Ben Keller in the javelin (126-4) and their 4×100 (49.72) and 4×400 (3:55.76) relay teams.

Girls’ first-place performers included Darcy Cochran in the 100 hurdles (15.22) and 300 hurdles (47.0), as well as the 100 (12.85) and 200 (26.91), Zoe Preble in the 400 (1:03.06), Kelsey Kennedy in the mile (5:40.21), Camilla Grosso in the two-mile (12:21.38) and Kristen Penley in the triple jump (32-4.5).

Scarborough’s girls joined three other teams at Thornton Academy and placed second to the hosts. Red Storm event winners included Abby Drapeau in the 200 (28.87), Bethany Sholl in the mile (5:23.05), Lena Wood in the two-mile (13:39.42), Emily Labbe in the 100 hurdles (15.75) and 300 hurdles (47.90), Leah Dickman in the javelin (97-3), Sydnie Pike in the racewalk (9:33.86) and their 4×400 (4:25.80) relay team.

The Scarborough boys were second to Thornton Academy at a four-team meet at Westbrook Tuesday. The Red Storm got wins from Jarett Flaker in the 100 (11.29), 200 (22.49) and 400 (50.93) and Anthony Clavette in the high jump (5-10) and triple jump (39-10), 

South Portland’s girls won a five-team meet at Portland. The Red Riots got wins from Rachel Kingsley in the 400 (1:08.07), Juliana Selser in the 800 (2:24.18), Anna Folley in the mile (5:32.46), Kaleisha Towle in the 100 hurdles (16.29), 300 hurdles (48.33) and long jump (16-10), Rebekah Hunnewell-Dunphe in the shot put (34-1), Mairna Brandao in the discus (89-9), Fiona Stawarz in the javelin (91-1) and Madison Smith in the racewalk (9:39.22).

The South Portland boys were third at a five-team meet at Portland and got first-place showings from Benjamin Sivik in the 200 (23.76) and Cliff Sennewald-Robbins in the racewalk (8:45.46).

Tennis

The qualifying round for the state singles tennis tournament began last weekend.

Cape Elizabeth’s Alexander Hansen advanced on the boys’ side, downing Scarborough’s Joshua Harder, 8-1, and Cheverus’ Cameron Harris, 6-0, 6-0.

On the girls’ side, Cape Elizabeth’s Blair Hollyday and Gilman advanced. Hollyday by virtue of a 6-0, 6-0 win over Gorham’s Hannah Dimick and Gilman by virtue of a 6-1, 6-1 victory over MGA’s Abbigail Fournier.

Scarborough’s girls’ team took a 7-2 record into Wednesday’s match at Portland after downing Windham and Biddeford by 5-0 scores. The Red Storm boys fell to 1-9 after losses to Windham (4-1), Biddeford (3-2) and Portland (5-0).

South Portland’s girls were 3-6 after a 4-1 win over Sanford Monday. The Red Riots boys 1-6 entering Wednesday’s match at Biddeford.

Cape Elizabeth’s boys improved to 6-3 after recent wins over Greely (5-0), St. Dom’s (4-1) and St. Dom’s again (3-2). The Capers girls were 6-2 after blanking St. Dom’s, 4-0, Tuesday.
