Dylan Hapworth scored the winning run on a throwing error in the bottom of the eighth inning as the third-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied for a 3-2 victory over the sixth-seeded Amherst Mammoths during a first-round game of the NCAA Division III baseball tournament at Auburn, New York.

The Huskies (28-13) advance into a winners’ bracket game at 7:45 p.m. on Friday. Amherst plays an elimination game at 1:15 p.m. Friday.

Southern Maine, trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the eighth, tied the game when Jake Dexter doubled and scored on Andrew Olszak’s single through the right side. Hapworth, who had walked, also scored on the play when the throw back to the infield was wild.

EASTERN LEAGUE: Luke Tendler ripped a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to give the Portland Sea Dogs a 12-9 Eastern League victory over the Altoona Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

Altoona had tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Logan Hill’s two-run ground-rule double.

• Left-hander Josh Taylor, acquired by the Red Sox from the Diamondbacks as part of the Deven Marrero trade, was assigned to Portland.

COLLEGES

MEN’S BASKETBALL: The Atlantic Coast Conference wants to expand the NCAA tournament.

Commissioner John Swofford said the league will propose legislation to expand the NCAA tournament from 68 to 72 teams. That would create a second set of First Four games in the western half of the country to go with the tournament-opening games in Dayton, Ohio.

TENNIS

ITALIAN OPEN: Seven-time champion Rafael Nadal methodically wore down Denis Shapovalov 6-4, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals.

HOCKEY

NHL: Alex Killorn scored the tiebreaker with about 8 minutes left, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 36 saves, and the Tampa Bay Lightning weathered the equivalent of more than a period without a shot on goal to edge the Washington Capitals 4-2, evening the Eastern Conference final at two games apiece.

The Lightning host Game 5 on Saturday night, with Game 6 back in Washington on Monday.

• Jonathan Marchessault scored two goals – including an empty-netter in the closing seconds – to lead the Vegas Golden Knights to a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Game 3 of the Western Conference final Wednesday night.

Vegas took a 2-1 series lead. The Golden Knights host Game 4 on Friday night.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Captain Patrick Kane scored two goals to lift the United States to a 3-2 win over the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals at Herning, Denmark, and Canada beat Russia 5-4 in overtime.

GOLF

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS: Miguel Angel Jimenez shot an 8-under 64 to take the first-round lead in the Regions Tradition at Birmingham, Alabama, the first of the tour’s five major championships.

LPGA: Annie Park turned a blistering stretch on the back nine into a mistake-free 6-under 65 and a share of the first-round lead at the Kingsmill Championship in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Jessica Korda, Azahara Munoz, In Gee Chun and Jaye Marie Green also shot 65.

PGA: Marc Leishman shot a 10-under 61 on the new links-style Trinity Forest course to take the first-round lead in the AT&T Byron Nelson at Dallas.

J.J. Spaun and Jimmy Walker shot 64.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Coming off an 0-16 season, the Browns have been chosen to appear on HBO’s popular “Hard Knocks” series that gives NFL fans a behind-the-scenes look at training camp.
