BASEBALL

The Portland Sea Dogs scored two runs in the first inning and added five in the third, including an RBI double by Tate Matheny, and defeated the Altoona Curve 8-4 for their third straight road win.

Danny Mars went 3 for 5 for Portland (15-24), and Jantzen White added a run with a double and finished 2 for 5.

Teddy Stankiewicz picked up the win with 61/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing five hits with seven strikeouts.

HIGH SCHOOLS

SOCCER: Freeport has hired head coaches for its boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, choosing Bob Strong Jr. to take over the boys’ program and David Intraversato as coach of the girls’ program.

Intraversato previously was an assistant coach for the Freeport girls and filled in as head coach late in the 2017 season. He’s also president of the Freeport United Soccer Club youth program. His daughter, Carly, was Freeport’s starting goalkeeper last year as a freshman.

Strong, a former University of Maine player, has coached for Freeport United and is also a board member. He’s the brother of Yarmouth girls’ basketball coach Christina Strong and the father of Jackson Fotter, the 2016 Maine Sunday Telegram boys’ soccer player of the year from Gorham.

AUTO RACING

NASCAR: Matt Kenseth’s return to racing is already paying big dividends for Roush Fenway Racing after he grabbed the pole for Saturday night’s All-Star race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Kenseth agreed to return to race on a limited schedule this year for his original team after being dumped by Joe Gibbs Racing last year. He will start alongside RFR teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on the front row.

PGA: Marc Leishman followed the best round of his career with a 5-under 66 at the AT&T Byron Nelson at Dallas, breaking the 36-hole tournament record previously shared by Tiger Woods.

Leishman was at 15-under 127 for a one-stroke lead over Aaron Wise, the 21-year-old rookie who shot a 63.

LPGA: In Gee Chun shot a 5-under 66 to take the lead in the suspended second round of the Kingsmill Championship at Williamsburg, Virginia.

CHAMPIONS: Gene Sauers shot a 5-under 67 at Birmingham, Alabama, to move into a first-place tie with Miguel Angel Jimenez in the second round of the Regions Tradition, the first of five Tour majors.

TENNIS

ITALIAN OPEN: Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic will renew their rivalry in the semifinals at Rome after three-set victories.

In the other half of the draw, defending champion Alexander Zverev will meet Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic

Maria Sharapova required more than three hours to eliminate last year’s French Open winner, Jelena Ostapenko, 6-7 (6), 6-4, 7-5; and defending champion Elina Svitolina defeated Angelique Kerber, 6-4, 6-4. Svitolina will next face 26th-ranked Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, and Sharapova’s semifinal opponent will be Simona Halep.
