If you ask laypeople to explain the role of Emergency Medical Services, most people will say, “Oh, you mean the people who drive the ambulance?” or “They are the ones that come to my house and take me to the hospital in an emergency.”

Unfortunately, there is not a widespread understanding of the role of EMS in the 911 system. While EMS providers understand their mission, the public may not. I’d like to tell EMS providers that their hard work and commitment do not go unnoticed by Emergency Department personnel. This week, National EMS Week, we honor their commitment, expertise and sacrifice to our Maine communities.

On any given day, EMS providers help save lives by responding to medical emergencies, including heart attack, difficulty breathing, fall or accidents, drowning, cardiac arrest, stroke, drug overdose or acute illness. EMS may provide both basic and advanced medical care at the scene of an emergency and en route to a hospital. They respond to difficult situations and dangerous environments, often putting their safety on hold for their patient. EMS providers care for immediate medical needs while exhibiting heartfelt care and compassion to their patients in their most difficult moments. They are critical to the health and safety of the communities they serve.

They are everyday heroes! Bravo!
