CAPE ELIZABETH — Parades will be the order of the day on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28, in Cape Elizabeth, South Portland and Scarborough.

The Cape Elizabeth march will be followed by a ceremony at the War Veteran’s Memorial on Scott Dyer Road in front of Pond Cove Elementary School.

The parade will kick off at 9 a.m. at the intersection of Fowler Road and Route 77. The route continues north on Route 77, turns left onto Scott Dyer Road, and ends at the memorial, where a brief ceremony and wreath-laying will be held.

The parade will include members of the Cape Elizabeth police, fire and rescue departments; the Water Extrication Team; Lions Club; Rotary Club; middle school marching band; Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts. The grand marshal will be Robert C. Crane, who was a U.S. Army Air Force B-17 pilot during World War II.

Veterans and active-duty personnel are invited to march. Families of active-duty personnel should notify parade Chairman Jim Huebener so they can be recognized. Groups hoping to march are also encouraged to contact him by email.

Following the ceremony, residents and guests are invited to an open house at the Town Center Fire Station.

South Portland 

At 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, the South Portland War Veterans Memorial Association, consisting of the VFW Post 832 and American Legion Post 36, will gather at the American Legion Post 35 on Broadway to lay flags at five cemeteries in town. Volunteers are welcome. 

The South Portland parade on Monday, May 28, begins at 10 a.m. at Southern Maine Community College and will proceed along Broadway to Mill Creek Park. It is expected to end at noon.

There will be a short ceremony at the end of the parade, and at noon, a wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the public boat landing. 

An annual outdoor Mass for deceased veterans will be held at 9 a.m. in the New Calvary Cemetery at 1461 Broadway. Msgr. Paul Stefanko will be the principal celebrant at the Mass, which will be celebrated in the St. Dominic/Armed Forces section. Seating is limited so attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair.

In the event of rain, the Mass will be held at Holy Cross Church on 124 Cottage Road in South Portland.

Scarborough

The town’s Libby Mitchell American Legion Post 76 will host a Memorial Day parade Monday, May 28, beginning at 10 a.m. and running to 11 a.m. The procession will begin at Scarborough High School, following Route 114 to Route 1, ending at the Legion Post on Manson Libby Road, and will include at stop at 10:15 a.m. for ceremonies at the Maine Veteran’s Home and the Veteran’s Monument. 

Prior to the parade there will also be ceremonies at cemeteries in town. A bus leaves from the post at 7:45 a.m. for the first service at Black Point Cemetery, followed by an 8:30 a.m. service at Dunstan Monument, 8:45 a.m. service at Dunstan Cemetery, and a 9 a.m. service at Blue Point Cemetery. 

An open house at the post begins at noon, with food and refreshments.
