Trevor Bates, a former UMaine standout at linebacker from Westbrook, signed a free-agent contract with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday.

Bates was a seventh-round pick for the Indianapolis Colts in the 2016 NFL Draft, 239th overall.

After his time with the Colts, Bates has been on the practice squad of the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

BASKETBALL

NBA: The Los Angeles Clippers and Coach Doc Rivers agreed to a contract extension.

Rivers, who is 259-151 in five years with the Clippers, was entering the final year of his deal.

WNBA: Tiffany Hayes scored 22 points and the visiting Atlanta Dream never trailed as they breezed to an 81-63 victory over the Chicago Sky for their first victory of the season.

AUTO RACING

HALL OF FAME: Jeff Gordon has been selected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

A four-time Cup Series champion who helped take stock car racing from a regional sport to the mainstream in the 1990s, Gordon received 96 percent of the votes from the Hall of Fame committee. He’s third in Cup history with 93 victories.

Car owners Jack Roush and Roger Penske also were selected to the Hall of Fame.

They will be joined by drivers Alan Kulwicki, known for his unique backwards victory lap, and Davey Allison, who won 19 Cup races, including the 1992 Daytona 500. Both died in 1993 – Kulwicki at age 38 in a plane crash and Allison three months later in a helicopter crash at 32.

TENNIS

GENEVA OPEN: Stan Wawrinka won his first ATP tour match in nearly four months, starting his title defense with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jared Donaldson.

LYON OPEN: John Isner and Taylor Fritz reached the quarterfinals with straight-set victories in France.

Fritz defeated third-seeded Jack Sock 7-6 (6), 6-2 after hitting eight aces, and second-seeded Isner beat Radu Albot 7-6 (3), 6-3.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: Arsenal hired Unai Emery as Arsene Wenger’s successor in the team’s first managerial appointment in 22 years.

The 46-year-old Spaniard will not enjoy the same authority as Wenger built up at Arsenal, being handed the title of head coach rather than manager.

ARGENTINA: Goalkeeper Sergio Romero will miss the World Cup because of a right knee injury, the Argentine soccer federation announced.
