ORONO — Jeremy Pena drove home a pair of runs and Danny Casals scored twice as fifth-seeded UMaine staved off elimination in the America East baseball tournament with a 6-1 win over No. 6 Albany.

The Black Bears will play fourth-seeded Stony Brook in the double-elimination tournament at 2:30 p.m. Friday.

Maine opened the scoring in the bottom of the third with a three-run rally capped by Pena’s two-out, two-run single up the middle. Casals singled and Jonathan Bennett and Brandon Vicens reached on bunts to load the bases with no outs. Kevin Doody’s bloop single gave Maine a 1-0 lead before Pena widened it to 3-0 two outs later.

TRACK AND FIELD

DIVISION I: Isaiah Harris of Lewiston safely moved through the first round of qualifying in the 800 meters at the East prelims in Tampa, Florida, finishing second in his heat with a time of 1 minute, 48.96 seconds.

Harris, a Penn State junior and a six-time Big Ten champion, will race again Friday afternoon.

Casco’s Kate Hall, a Georgia sophomore and the defending NCAA long jump champion, had a final jump of 20-61/4 to qualify for the national championships June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.

DIVISION III: Ben Decker of Yarmouth and Bates College seniors Katherine Cook and Adedire Fakorede earned All-America honors at the Division III championships in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Decker, a senior at Williams, finished fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 30 minutes, 49.26 seconds.

Cook, seeded 12th in the women’s 10,000, broke her school record while placing second in 35:17.48.

Fakorede became a three-time All-American by placing fourth in the men’s discus with a throw of 174 feet, 1/4 inch.

SOFTBALL

ST. ANSELM 2, SOUTHERN ARKANSAS 1: Madison Borrelli’s RBI ground single scored Jordan O’Connor with the winning as St. Anselm (42-10-1) went in to extra innings for a nine-inning victory over Southern Arkansas (57-10) during opening-round play of the Division II softball championship tournament in Salem, Virginia.

St. Anselm has four players from Scarborough High.
