Grant Urken became the first Bowdoin College player to win an NCAA Division III singles tennis championship, beating Jack Katzman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in straight sets Saturday in Claremont, California.

Urken, a junior, was unseeded but knocked off three top-eight seeds before defeating Katzman, 6-3, 6-2.

ROWING: Bates won both women’s grand finals in Sarasota, Florida, to earn its second straight NCAA championship and third in four years.

The Bobcats, captained by Olivia Stockly of Cumberland, took the gold medal in the varsity eight race for the first time and also edged Wellesley in the second varsity eight, taking that event for the fifth straight year.

TRACK AND FIELD: Sophie Stokes Cerkvenik of Colby captured an NCAA title in the 100-meter hurdles in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Stokes Cerkvenik, a junior, broke her own school record with a time of 14.06 seconds. She joined Cindy Pomerleau, the 1997 heptathlon champion, as the only Colby women to win NCAA track tiles.

Bowdoin junior Sara Ory also earned All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in the 400 hurdles (1:01:30).

SOFTBALL: Saint Anselm suffered its first loss of the NCAA Division II national tournament, falling 11-5 to Southern Arkansas at Salem, Virginia. Maggie Murphy and Megan Murrell of Scarborough each had a hit for the Hawks (43-11-1). The teams face off again Sunday in an elimination game.

GOLF

PGA: Justin Rose birdied the first three holes to quickly extend his lead at the Fort Worth Invitational and finished with a 4-under 66 to take a four-stroke advantage into the final round.

Rose, the 2013 U.S. Open champion and Olympic gold medalist with eight PGA Tour victories, was 14 under. Emiliano Grillo shot 69 and was at 10 under along with Brooks Koepka, who had a 67.

LPGA: Minjee Lee shot a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the Volvik Championship at Ann Arbor, Michigan, with Stacy Lewis tied for second while playing five months pregnant.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Scott McCarron, seeking a second senior major title to go with his 2017 Senior Players Championship, made his only bogey of the third round on the final hole to slip into a tie with Tim Petrovic in the Senior PGA Championship at Benton Harbor, Michigan.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Francesco Molinari mastered the toughest conditions of the week to shoot a 6-under 66 and share the lead with Rory McIlroy after three rounds of the BMW PGA Championship at Virginia Water, England.

SOCCER

MLS: Cristian Techera scored three second-half goals and the Vancouver Whitecaps overcame several defensive errors to tie the visiting New England Revolution, 3-3.

PREMIER LEAGUE: Fulham secured a return after four years away and a windfall of at least $210 million by beating Aston Villa 1-0 in the second-tier English playoff final at London.

Tom Cairney sidefooted home a finish in the 23rd minute, ensuring Fulham joined Wolverhampton Wanderers and Cardiff in getting promoted from the League Championship.

HORSE RACING

SANTA ANITA DERBY: Accelerate rallied from third in mid-stretch to win the $500,000 event at Arcadia, California, by 4 1/4 lengths over Dr. Dorr.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Accelerate ran 1 1/4 miles in 2:01.38, and paid $5.80, $3 and $2.10 at 9-5 odds.
