The family of Navy Engineman 2nd Class Austin Thomas Williams, who passed away April 5 while serving his country in Manama, Bahrain, would like to send heartfelt thanks to each and every person who reached out during this most difficult of times.

We received calls, letters, visits, social media messages, gifts and prayers from around the world and met people we would have never met had it not been for the outpouring of care and concern.

It’s evident to us, more than ever, that Austin touched more lives than we knew. Specifically, and at the risk of missing many people, we would like to give thanks to the following:

n Friends and family: The outpouring of support and concern was overwhelming and meant so much to us. Family is the most important of all things. We are so very thankful for a large, caring family. Family can do no wrong and friends are forever.

n Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine: Your phone call was welcomed and appreciated.

n Navy Chief Fonda Keech: Fonda was assigned as our casualty assistance calls officer but became a family friend. Her compassion made all the difference. We truly do not know how we would have done this without her.

n Command Master Chief Allen Keller: Allen made the trip from Hawaii to represent and to speak on Austin’s service.

n Chief Ulises Malagonreza: Ulises came in from Manama and the USS Sentry, where Austin was assigned. His presence was immensely appreciated.

n The Fisher House, Freeport High School class of 2014, everyone who donated to the GofundMe account: The astounding amount of support will ensure future Freeport High students are provided assistance as they graduate. All are welcome, just as you are.

n Maine State Police, Brunswick Police, Freeport Police Fire and Rescue, Yarmouth Police Fire and Rescue, Cumberland Police Fire and Rescue, Portland Police Fire and Rescue, News Center Maine (WCSH/WLBZ), WMTW Channel 8, the Portland Press Herald: The emotionally overwhelming display of patriotism and respect for Austin as we drove him from Brunswick to Portland, and the reporting on his service to country and community, leave an indelible sense of pride in our community and we are forever grateful.

n Lindquist Funeral Home and Harraseeket Inn: Your flexibility, compassion and concern will never be forgotten. Thank you for taking care of so many details.

n Rev. Carolyn Lambert: We can never thank you enough. You described Austin so very accurately. Your leadership of Austin’s service, and your amazing words, helped us make it through an unbearable day. Faith does matter.

To everyone who reached out and gave thought to Austin, we thank you. Always remember: “Agape is the reason we’re here.”
