Enacting strong gun-violence prevention laws is important to me. It is an issue I will keep in mind when I vote in the June 12 gubernatorial primary.

Four candidates in the Democratic primary have received the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. They are Adam Cote, Mark Dion, Mark Eves and Betsy Sweet.

Please note that Janet Mills is not on this list. During her time in the Maine Legislature, she received an A rating from the National Rifle Association.

She voted against a bill that would have required a background check on firearm sales at gun shows. She voted against a bill that would have given public colleges and universities the authority to regulate the possession of guns on their campuses. And when a bill was presented to ensure that survivors of domestic violence were notified if an individual with a restraining order against them tried to obtain a gun, she offered an amendment to protect the guns, not the survivors.

That simple bill, L.D. 1938, An Act to Protect Victims of Domestic Violence, was targeted with a number of last-minute amendments that had nothing to do with the bill but were, coincidentally, on the NRA’s wish list.

Fortunately, the bill did ultimately pass, without Mills’ amendment to protect the guns.

When you go into the voting booth on June 12, please be sure you go in armed with the facts.
