Rei, Matheny propel Sea Dogs past Senators

Austin Rei’s home run in the third inning Sunday started the Portland Sea Dogs on their way to a 6-2 Eastern League victory over the Harrisburg Senators in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Tate Matheny and Deiner Lopez scored on a throwing error in the fourth to increase the lead to 3-0. Harrisburg’s Adam Brett Walker answered with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth, but four Sea Dogs pitchers held the Senators scoreless the rest of the way.

Teddy Stankiewicz (5-5) earned his team-leading fifth win, giving up three hits, two runs and four walks while striking out four in six innings. Travis Lakins, Jordan Weems and Josh Taylor combined for seven strikeouts over three scoreless relief innings.

Matheny scored on a groundout by Lopez in the sixth, then singled home Chad De La Guerra and Jantzen Witte in the eighth.

AUTO RACING

INDYCAR: Ryan Hunter-Reay got his first IndyCar win since 2015, prevailing at Belle Isle in Detroit after teammate Alexander Rossi slid off the track with about seven laps to go.

Rossi, the pole winner, was struggling to hold off Hunter-Reay before the mishap at a right turn on Lap 64 of 70. From there, it was smooth sailing for Hunter-Reay on the 2.35-mile street course. He finished more than 11 seconds ahead of Will Power.

Ed Jones finished third, followed by Scott Dixon. Rossi fell to 12th and dropped out of the series points lead.

OXFORD PLAINS: Austin Teras, 15, of Gray earned his first Super Late Model victory in the 50-lap feature Saturday night.

Teras moved to the front early in the race and held of Scott Robbins of Dixfield. Timmy Brackett of Buckfield finished third.

Other feature winners were Zach Bowie of Turner in Street Stock, Patrick Sullivan of Poland in PASS Modifieds, David Whittier of Poland in Bandits, Kyle Kilgore of South Paris in Figure 8, and Thomas Brackett of Auburn in the Rookie division.

FOOTBALL

NFL: Green Bay Packers linebacker Clay Matthews says he needs surgery on his nose after getting hit in the face with a line drive during a charity softball game.

Matthews was pitching during Saturday’s game when offensive lineman Lucas Patrick hit the ball into Matthews’ face, knocking him to the ground. Matthews tweeted later that he busted his nose and would have surgery after the swelling subsides.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Candace Parker had 19 points and 10 rebounds and Chelsea Gray added 15 points to help the Los Angeles Sparks beat the visiting Minnesota Lynx, 77-69.

Odyssey Sims and Nneka Ogwumike added 12 points apiece for the Sparks (4-1).

The Lynx (2-5), who beat Los Angeles in the WNBA finals last season, have lost four in a row for the first time since dropping five straight in the 2010 season.

n Jasmine Thomas scored a season-high 25 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to help the Connecticut Sun (5-0) remain undefeated with an 88-64 road win against the Washington Mystics (5-3) and remain the lone undefeated team in the WNBA.

n Cheyenne Parker had 20 points and 13 rebounds – both career highs – to help the short-handed Chicago Sky win at home against the Las Vegas Aces, 95-90.

n Diana Taurasi and DeWanna Bonner scored 20 points apiece and combined for Phoenix’s final 20 points in a 78-71 win at Atlanta.
